Allen Hurns Reportedly Released by Jaguars, Rumored to Have 'Strong' FA Market

Tyler ConwayMar 20, 2018

The Jacksonville Jaguars continued retooling their wide receiver corps Tuesday, reportedly releasing Allen Hurns.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news, noting Hurns is expected to have a "strong" free-agent market.

Hurns, 26, spent his first four NFL seasons in Jacksonville. He recorded 39 receptions for 484 yards and two touchdowns in 2017 but was limited to 10 games due to injury.

The Jaguars will save $7 million on their 2018 salary cap by moving on. Hurns signed a four-year, $40 million contract in 2016 but struggled each of the last two seasons.

The former Miami star broke out in 2015, recording 64 catches for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns. He hasn't hit the 1,000-yard mark in either of the last two seasons combined since, thanks in large part due to injuries.

Jaguars players, most notably quarterback Blake Bortles, remained complimentary of Hurns despite his struggles with injuries.

"He's in the right spots at the right times," Bortles told reporters during the postseason. "He's huge, especially in away games and in environments like that, when noise is an issue. And [he's] really good at helping the other receivers."

Hurns shouldn't hurt for suitors on the open market. He's still a viable downfield threat when healthy and has a big body and solid top-end speed, which could make the 6'3", 201-pounder a solid buy-low candidate.

The departure of Hurns leaves the Jaguars without their top two wide receivers from the 2015 season. Allen Robinson, who looked like one of the top wideouts during his breakout 2015 campaign, signed with the Chicago Bears this offseason after the Jaguars declined to use their franchise tag on him.

Jacksonville will instead go into 2018 hopeful that Keelan Cole's solid 2017 was not a fluke and that Marqise Lee stays healthy. It's also possible the team adds another receiver in April's draft.
