March Madness 2018: NCAA Tournament Dates, Bracket Release TV Schedule

Paul KasabianMar 10, 2018

No. 4 and No. 5 seeds always sit in no man's land, and the same will be true in the 2018 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. On one hand, they usually aren't high enough to be considered March Madness favorites, in part because they each have the potential to face the No. 1 seed in their respective regionals in the Sweet 16. That being said, it is not uncommon to see No. 4 and No. 5 teams spring upsets in that round either.

On the other hand, No. 4 and No. 5 seeds are vulnerable to upsets themselves, as top mid-majors and future Cinderella stories always seem to find their way on the No. 12 or No. 13 lines against them in the first round.

Bracket Release TV Schedule

TBS will carry the 2018 NCAA March Madness Selection Show from 6-8 p.m. ET on Sunday. It can also be live-streamed through NCAA March Madness Live.

The show format will be a little different from past years, as noted by NCAA.com: "The Selection Show will begin with the announcement of all 68 tournament teams, followed by the release of the brackets and matchups, with analysis, discussion, interviews and reactions from teams as they find out if they made the 'Dance,' along with their region, seeding and opponent."

In past years, the regionals were announced one by one throughout the show, with teams being revealed gradually.

Projected No. 4 and No. 5 Seed Breakdowns

West Virginia

The Mountaineers are playing in the Big 12 championship against Kansas and will likely move into a top-three seed if they spring an upset. Failing that, a No. 4 spot is a potential home for them.

WVU is no stranger to the No. 4 spot, having been there last year. The Mountaineers beat Bucknell and Notre Dame in the first weekend before nearly taking down No. 1 seed Gonzaga in the Sweet 16.

This is still a very tough team, one that could be a Final Four dark horse. Led by senior point guard Jevon Carter (17.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.9 steals), the Mountaineers are ranked 11th in the Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings thanks to the 12th-most efficient offense in the country.

They are also only one of two teams to have beaten Virginia, who is a front-runner to be named the No. 1 overall seed in this year's tournament.

Given these factors, WVU could very well find itself playing in San Antonio by the end of the month. While a first-weekend exit is plausible, a deep run is more likely.

Clemson

The Tigers are not coming into the tournament in top form, as they have lost five of their last eight games. Granted, they played Virginia and Duke during that span, but they only have one road win against an NCAA tournament hopeful on their resume (a 79-65 victory at Ohio State in late November).

On the other hand, Clemson has a balanced scoring attack that could prove beneficial in March Madness. Five players score at least 10.8 points per game, led by junior guard Marcquise Reed with 15.9.

That being said, the offense has gone a bit cold in recent games, as Clemson has not hit the 60-point mark in four of its last seven contests.

The Tigers wouldn't be the first team to go on a deep tournament run after struggling coming into the tournament (the 1985 Villanova squad that won the national title as a No. 8 seed went just 6-7 in its last 13 regular-season and conference-tournament games, for example), but it's hard seeing them going further than the Sweet 16.

Arizona

DeAndre Ayton, Arizona's 7'1" forward, is a serious matchup problem for any team on the court. He averages 19.9 points (on an efficient 61.2 percent shooting) in addition to 11.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.

The potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft is also solid from the free-throw line (73.6 percent) and can even stick the occasional three-pointer (12-of-33).

Ayton's efforts are supplemented in part by junior guard Allonzo Trier, who averages 18.7 points per game, and sophomore guard Rawle Alkins, who scores 13.7 points a night. Arizona seven-foot big man Dusan Ristic pulls down 7.1 boards per night.

The Wildcats will also be coming into the tournament on a hot streak if they beat USC in the Pac-12 tournament final on Saturday night. Arizona has won seven of its last eight games and 14 of its past 17.

With two tough big men and two guards who can light up the scoreboard from the outside, Arizona could be finding itself in the Final Four.
