Possible No. 1 Seeds

Duke had the potential for a No. 1 seed in this year's NCAA tournament if it won the ACC tournament while other teams slipped up. But instead, it was the Blue Devils who fell victim to a dangerous North Carolina team that took care of business against its biggest rival in the ACC semifinals.
For the time being, it looks like the following four teams are locks for No. 1 seeds: Virginia, Villanova, Xavier and Kansas. Just like we all predicted last fall, right?
Virginia did well against a tough Clemson side Friday to reach the ACC tournament final to take on the Tarheels, and a win essentially guarantees them a top seed in the Big Dance.
But even if the Cavaliers lose to UNC, they're still in good standing to warrant a top seed in the tournament. After all, there isn't much competition at their heels.
Villanova defeated Butler 87-68 in the Big East semifinal and look to be one of the teams to beat once the tournament tips off next week.
The Wildcats will likely have to win against No. 5-seeded Providence to guarantee a No. 1 seed, but they shouldn't have much trouble against the Friars Saturday afternoon.

Kansas was another team to win comfortably in its conference semifinal matchup, defeating Kansas State 83-67 to advance to the Big 12 tournament final.
Regardless of Kansas' result against West Virginia Saturday afternoon, the Jayhawks will likely have the No. 1 seed wrapped up. Although, a convincing victory over the Mountaineers wouldn't hurt their case.
Xavier didn't come out of nowhere this season, but it's hard to imagine many people had this team playing for a No. 1 seed this late in the game.
But credit where credit is due for Xavier, as the Musketeers fought through a tough regular season to make it to the big East semifinals. Unfortunately for Xavier, it fell to Providence in the semis, leaving its No. 1 seed in doubt.
Having said that, Xavier still might be able to hold on to a No. 1 seed now that Duke fell to North Carolina in the ACC. If the Tarheels were to defeat Virginia, however, it's possible that UNC could steal a No. 1 seed with two high-quality wins on its resume going into the tournament.
It's unlikely that the selection committee would choose UNC over Xavier, but it's possible. We'll have to wait until Sunday for the outcome.
