Timberwolves: Who To Start?
With so many confusing positions up for grabs on the Wolves' roster, who is going to start at each is a complete mystery. Here are the candidates:
Point Guard: Jonny Flynn, Ramon Sessions
It has to be one of them. A third party couldn't possibly start for this club, it has to be one or the other. Flynn is currently the team's No. 1 candidate for new best player, but Sessions could be as well, he just has yet to prove his skill in the NBA.
Sessions brings the same skill set to the table as far as play, but he does have the height advantage over Flynn.
Although, judging by how it came out in the preseason, it'll probably go to Flynn.
Shooting Guard: Corey Brewer, Wayne Ellington, Ramon Sessions, Sasha Pavlovic, Damien Wilkins
This position is the definitely the toughest call.
ESPN has Damien Wilkins starting. This seems like a Kevin McHale decision, kind of like starting Kevin Ollie. It could happen, I just really hope that it doesn't.
Neither Corey Brewer nor Ramon Sessions fit perfectly at the position, but Brewer is improving his offense, and the Wolves are trying to fit in the two-PG system before Rubio heads to the team.
The new guy in town, Sasha Pavlovic, could make his case to start, but he's not the best in any category—he's not the veteran, the rookie, the shooter, or the defender. He's dominated in every category (by Wilkins, Ellington, Ellington, and Brewer, respectively)
Pure shooter Wayne Ellington might be the best candidate to start next to Corey Brewer assuming Brewer starts at the SF position, as their type of play works well together. That chemistry would be the only reason Wayne would start, but if he doesn't, I think that he and Brewer should come off the bench together.
Still, a tough call.
Small Forward: Ryan Gomes, Corey Brewer
This one is pretty simple, but still unknown. Ryan Gomes has the all-around game, the experience, and the strong team leadership, but Corey is really getting quite good...at very specific things.
The good news for Corey is that the very specific things he's good at (such as defense) are just what the team needs in their small forward. Most of the shooting guards are only good at shooting, so Brewer looks like the man to contrast it.
However, Gomes looks more like a starter when you just think of his role on the team, so I'm going to say that it'll probably be Gomes, at least on day one.
Power Forward: Kevin Love, Al Jefferson, Brian Cardinal, Oleksiy Pecherov
Cardinal and Pecherov will just battle it out until Love and Jeff are back, but when they are, it's bye bye to them.
Love and Jefferson. It sounds pretty good, doesn't it? Another team of twin towers? Well, the problem is, neither of them are skyscrapers. Love and Jefferson together would mean the Timberwolves would have a short lineup, meaning tough times when they play against the really big big men, such as Yao (next year) or Hasheem Thabeet.
So, in the long run, Jefferson may just have to take this position, and Love will have to find a spot on the bench, or a spot elsewhere.
Not to disappoint many fans out there, but this year (when healthy) it'll be Love, and Big Al will be right beside him.
Center: Al Jefferson, Ryan Hollins
Those two will probably be the two starters while Love gets his surgery. When Love comes back, it'll go back to Jefferson and Love, but Hollins gives the Wolves the 7'0'' height that Minnesota needs in their five spot.
So first Hollins, then Jefferson. It's not a debate, just a midseason change.
As you can see, the Wolves have a variety of options on who will begin each game for this incredibly new and, hopefully, talented bunch of kids. They have some double PG and double PF options, or they can disappoint the most talented, and go with who will make the best pure lineup.
We'll see on day one.
