Former Real Madrid President Says Club Wants Harry Kane Over Robert Lewandowski

Tom SunderlandFeb 26, 2018

Former Real Madrid President Ramon Calderon has said the European champions will prioritise a move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane ahead of Robert Lewandowski this summer.

Calderon served as Real president from 2006 to 2009 and recently spoke to German newspaper Bild, suggesting Lewandowski is only a backup option behind their real target, Kane (h/t Mirror's Ben Rebuck): "Lewandowski is a player that Real is always in the picture with. I think Real’s goal is more Kane, also because of his age, but if it does not work out with him, I think Real is trying to get Lewandowski."

Los Blancos will be expected to make some major moves in the summer transfer window, as the club sits third in La Liga, 14 points below leaders Barcelona. The Spanish champions' attack has failed to impress at times this season.

While first-choice Real striker Karim Benzema has disappointed with only four goals in 17 Liga appearances this term, Kane has once again been a lethal force in the Premier League, as Match of the Day illustrated:

His goals have helped Tottenham climb above Chelsea and Arsenal into the Premier League's top four,  with Kane having netted 24 goals this term to lead the race for the Premier League Golden Boot, which he's won the past two seasons.

The England frontman has proved his worth as a complete striker over the past few years, and Sky Sports PL recently suggested it's his shot frequency that could be the key to his impressive goal return:

Benzema has been considerably off Kane's pace, and Real have only Borja Mayoral for reinforcement as an out-and-out striker, having sold Alvaro Morata to Chelsea last summer.

Calderon believes Kane sits above Lewandowski in Real's list of priorities, but AFP's Kieran Canning recently hinted it may be a different Spurs figure Los Blancos end up poaching:

Lewandowski has scored 29 goals in 34 appearances for Bayern this season and is again leading the club to Bundesliga glory, with Die Roten on the verge of clinching a sixth consecutive German league title.

It's that kind of success that means Real may struggle slightly more to convince the player to join their ranks, and Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes recently said his club has no interest in selling the striker, per Goal:

Following Neymar's £200 million move to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona last summer, it's likely either forward would cost a similarly eye-watering fee in the event his club was willing to cash in at the end of this season.

Real broke the transfer record when they signed Gareth Bale from Spurs for £85.3 million in 2013, and the north Londoners may expect the Spanish champions to break new ground once again if they come calling for Kane.
