Miles Bridges Says He Hasn't Taken Any Money Amid NCAA Corruption Probe

Scott PolacekFeb 25, 2018

Michigan State sophomore Miles Bridges insisted neither he nor his mother have taken any money amid the ongoing FBI investigation into corruption in college basketball.

"I haven't [taken any money]. My mom hasn't. It's as simple as that," Bridges said after helping lead the Spartans to a 68-63 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday, per Dan Murphy of ESPN.com.

The comments come after Bridges appeared in the report from Pat Forde and Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports regarding information in the investigation. According to documents in the report, Christian Dawkins—a runner for sports agent Andy Miller—said he withdrew $400 to give to Bridges' mother and met with Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo.

Bridges was also asked about any relationship with Dawkins and said "I don't know him at all," per Brendan F. Quinn of The Athletic. "If he was in here, I wouldn't know if he was here."

The wingman said he has only been interviewed by the university's compliance office and not the FBI or NCAA, per Quinn. He also said he believes his mother submitted a statement to Michigan State's compliance office but wasn't sure about the contents of the statement, per Murphy.

Izzo said Michigan State did its own investigation and determined the reported $400 payment to Bridges' mother wasn't true, per Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal.

"The NCAA moved on it quickly and there are reasons that they did," Izzo added, per Murphy. "They cleared him to play or I wouldn't have played him."

Izzo also explained the extent of his relationship with Dawkins was through Dawkins' father, Lou, who coached former Michigan State star Draymond Green and other players in high school.

Michigan State's involvement in the Yahoo report extended beyond Bridges specifically, as Murphy explained it also included an email from Dawkins to Miller saying he was attempting to close a deal to send then-recruit Brian Bowen to the Spartans. The deal would have meant Bridges and former Michigan State player Gary Harris would join their agency in exchange for Bowen's commitment.

On the court, the Spartans clinched the Big Ten regular-season championship with the win over Wisconsin and will turn their attention to the upcoming conference and NCAA tournaments. They are looking to reach their second Final Four in four seasons.
