NFL Week 7 Picks, Brett Favre's Luck Runs Out Against "Hair" Polamalu

Patrick KellyOct 21, 2009

Here's my unofficial pick 'em for this weekend's games. If you have your own, get on it!

Green Bay Packers at Cleveland Browns - 1:00 p.m. at Cleveland Browns Stadium

Look, things are so bleak in Cleveland right now, LeBron may just tell the whole team to leave. They've only won one game this year, and that one they should have, by all rights, lost. I mean, how does your quarterback go 2-for-17 and you still win? Horrible.

But there is more wrong with this organization right now than just a lack of offensive effort.

The Packers are looking better this year overall, and despite a couple of tough losses, they are still in this divisional race. Look for them to have their way with a Browns team that needs answers but isn't finding any.

Green Bay 34 Cleveland 3

San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans - 1:00 p.m. at Reliant Stadium

I was a 49ers fan back when Joe Montana was my hero, so I was a little excited to see Mike Singletary seemingly turning this team around. Maybe I got too excited too soon. They've lost two of their last three and stand to lose the lead in the division to an Arizona team that's quietly sneaking back into contention.

Houston has improved over past years, and in fact, look like they could give Indianapolis problems in the AFC South. Schaub looked good in last week's thrashing of the Bengals, but look for this one to be a lot closer.

San Francisco 23 Houston 20

San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs - 1:00 p.m. at Arrowhead Stadium

Upset Alert! I like the Chiefs in this one. Don't really know why, but maybe it's the fact that they nearly beat the Cowboys two weeks ago, then stuck it to the Redskins this past week. Not that those are top-ranked teams or anything, but I think the Chiefs may have a head of steam and the Chargers are still reeling from being completely outplayed by one of the best teams in the AFC in the Broncos this past Monday night. A short week and an offensive line that has trouble protecting Rivers is a formula for an upset.

Kansas City 21 San Diego 13

Indianapolis Colts at St. Louis Rams - 1:00 p.m. at Edward Jones Dome

The Colts are playing better than they have in several years. It seems like Manning is winning games easily, and who wouldn't with the offensive talent that Bill Polian has been able to field for him? Who would have thought that Garcon and Collie would have replaced Harrison and Gonzalez as household names?

The Rams still struggle to win a game, mainly because they can't close the deal. Not to mention that they'll be playing a top-ranked defense this week in the Colts. Last week was probably their best opportunity to get a win against the Jags. The Colts will have to be careful though; playing a team hungry for a win and coming off of a bye week is never a good combination. But look what they did to the Titans last week. The Colts might get to a slow start, but once they get going, look out!

Indianapolis 38 St. Louis 10

New England Patriots vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 1:00 p.m. at Wembley Stadium

So, you just got done setting NFL records by shutting out the self-destructive Tennessee Titans 59-0, you have to travel halfway across the world to play a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that has yet to win a game. Apparently, if you're Tom Brady, this is not a problem.

The Bucs looked horrible against the running attack of Carolina, and won't fare any better this week against the masterful Brady. Let the "running up the score" discussion continue! The most interesting portion of this game will be seeing how many Brits show up to the game.

New England 48 Tampa Bay 13

Minnesota Vikings at Pittsburgh Steelers - 1:00 p.m. at Heinz Field

Upset Alert!  The Minnesota Vikings taste defeat! The Steelers and their grizzly bear of a quarterback have their sights set on the postseason, and I still have a hard time with the Vikings continuing to win on Brett Favre's luck (I still think he closes his eyes when he throws the ball).

The Steel Curtain is back to 100 percent with old "Hair" Polamalu back in the lineup. As long as he stays healthy for the whole game, he'll make the plays against Favre that the Steelers need to get past the Vikes. It will be close, but the Steelers will pull it out.

Pittsburgh 24 Vikings 21

Buffalo Bills at Carolina Panthers - 4:05 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium

I knew the Bills would have problems after McKelvin fumbled the kickoff that, had he stayed in the end zone, would have sealed their victory over the Patriots in week one. Let's face it, the Bills are riddled with all kinds of problems, despite the fact that they beat a luckless Jets team last weekend. One is their defense, which will have a tough time containing the double-headed running attack of the Panthers. What the Panthers may lack through the air, they make up for on the ground. They should have no problems at home against a flailing Bills team.

Carolina 28 Buffalo 9

New York Jets at Oakland Raiders - 4:05 p.m. at Oakland Coliseum

Who would have thought I would ever say that Jamarcus Russell looked good? Last week against the Eagles, though, he looked good. The Jets fell apart in overtime to seal their doom against the Bills, so they'll be looking for a revenge game. What better revenge game is there than against an organization that has problems that range from an offense that apparently is good or not good depending on the weather, to an absolute P.R. disaster caused by a head coach who apparently thought UFC moves were OK in the office. Despite the fact that it's all bad in Oakland, look for this one to be close. I mean look at what happened last week when the Jets were supposed to whip the Bills easily. Overtime anyone?

New York Jets 16 Oakland 13

Chicago Bears at Cincinnati Bengals - 4:15 p.m. at Paul Brown Stadium

I think it is safe to say that the Bengal's loss last week to the Texans was the exception rather than the rule. The Bears have yet to prove to me that they are for real, even though they were a couple of giveaways away from winning at Atlanta last week. However, they have to now go on the road again against a Bengals team that will be looking to stay atop the AFC North. This is another close one, but the Bengals prevail at home.

Cincinnati 27 Chicago 24

Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys - 4:15 p.m. at Cowboys Stadium

The Cowboys come off the bye and have some catching up to do. Despite the Giants' loss to New Orleans, they're still two games behind them in the standings. The Cowboys need this win, but they have serious issues with closing games out. They dodged a bullet in Kansas City, but didn't get so lucky against Denver. Matt Ryan is a solid QB who can take the pressure and make the big plays, which Dallas continually gives up. The Falcons will pull this one out on the road at Jerryworld.

Atlanta 20 Dallas 16

New Orleans Saints at Miami Dolphins - 4:15 p.m. at Land Shark Stadium

New Orleans is playing at some other level that I haven't even heard of. Their offense continues to make huge plays while their defense stifles even the greatest teams. Brees is one of the best in the league, and the Dolphins' defense won't pose much of a threat. Their defense may have a few more problems with Chad Henne and the Dolphins' offense, which has been playing well the past couple of weeks. This will be closer than everyone thinks, but New Orleans will close it out with a win.

New Orleans 34 Miami 27

Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants - 8:20 p.m. at Giants Stadium

The Giants are back home against a Cardinals team that still hasn't found the answer to winning consistently. Yes, they nearly shut out a Seahawks team last week, but most of that was defense. They have Hasselbeck back, but now he has to face the pass rush of an outstanding Giants' defense. Don't let last week's game against New Orleans fool you, they'll get the job done against the Cardinals. Look for Eli to put up some big numbers too. This Giants team is out to avenge their loss last week.

New York Giants 38 Arizona 14

Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins - 8:30 p.m. Monday at Fedex Field

The Washington Redskins have problems, but their biggest one this week is that they have to host an Eagles team looking to prove that last week's loss to the Raiders was just a fluke. The Redskins thought they could sink a bunch of money into their team and that it would buy them a competitive edge. I guess they were wrong. Jim Zorn has to be frustrated by having his coaching mojo taken away. He'll be gone before the end of the year, and the sad thing is the Redskins won't be able to afford a new coach. Albert Haynesworth has to be kicking himself, at least in Tennessee you know they'll eventually turn it around. Philly easily in this one.
