Marjory Stoneman Douglas Girls Basketball Forfeits Playoff Game After Shooting
The girls basketball team at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people were murdered and multiple others wounded by a gunman last week, will forfeit its upcoming playoff game to conclude its season.
The school informed the Florida High School Athletic Association of its decision Saturday, per Wells Dusenbury of the Sun Sentinel. Stoneman Douglas was scheduled to play Cypress Bay in the Class 9A regional quarterfinals Wednesday. The game was initially scheduled for last Wednesday but was postponed because of the shooting.
Per Dusenbury, Maddy Wilford, a junior guard on the team, was one of the people wounded in the Feb. 14 shooting, which was one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history. Wilford was shot multiple times and was critically injured but is considered in stable condition after undergoing multiple surgeries.
She was one of the victims President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited last week in the aftermath of the shooting. She remains hospitalized.
The Stoneman Douglas team finished its season with a 15-8 record.
