Michigan Football Recruiting 2018: Top Remaining Recruits, Class Predictions

Joe TanseyFeb 7, 2018

Much like other top college football programs, Michigan was a beneficiary of the early signing period in December.

The Wolverines enter Wednesday's National Signing Day with 20 commitments in the class of 2018, which means they could be in for a slow day.

Just because Michigan has most of its top targets secured doesn't mean it hasn't stopped its hunt for marquee talent.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh and Co. are in the mix for the top unsigned offensive player and a few other key pieces on Wednesday.

Top Remaining Recruits

Nicholas Petit-Frere, OT, Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Florida)

Harbaugh tried to make an impact on offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere in December, as he had the Wolverines practice at his school in the buildup to the Outback Bowl.

The unique tactic brought the Wolverines on to the radar of the five-star lineman, but they are in stiff competition with rivals Ohio State and Notre Dame as well as Alabama and Florida.

Although Michigan has two offensive tackles in its class of 2018, the capture of Petit-Frere would be a massive help to the unit and it would strike a blow against Ohio State in the recruiting market.

If Petit-Frere lands in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he could contend for a starting position in his freshman season.

Otis Reese, LB, Lee County (Leesburg, Georgia)

The recruiting process is never over until a player officially commits to a program with his national letter of intent.

Linebacker Otis Reese committed to Michigan in 2016, but he might not end up as a Wolverine for the 2018 season.

The Georgia native could decommit from Michigan on Wednesday and end up at Georgia, which would be a huge blow to the Wolverines as they already have a lackluster recruiting class.

If Reese opts to wear maize and blue for the next three-to-four years, everyone in Ann Arbor will breathe a sigh of relief when Wednesday ends.

JaMarr Chase, WR, Archbishop Rummel (Metarie, Louisiana)

Michigan needs a miracle and then some to land wide receiver JaMarr Chase.

The Louisiana native is considering LSU, Auburn and TCU among others, and there's a miniscule chance he opts to go north to play his college football in the Big Ten.

Without a marquee name like Chase coming to the program on National Signing Day, the Wolverines will have to be fine with the quartet of players they have in the class of 2018 that are listed as a wide receiver, tight end or athlete.

Prediction

There's no way to sugar coat Michigan's recruiting class.

The Wolverines delivered a dud class of 2018 that could fall out of the top 20 in the team rankings depending on what happens on Wednesday.

Wednesday's worst-case scenario for the Wolverines features the loss of Reese and Petit-Frere going to Ohio State.

If they can at least hang on to Reese, Wednesday won't be seen as a massive loss for a coaching staff that has to produce on-field results in 2018.
