Ohio State Football Recruiting 2018: Top Remaining Recruits, Class Predictions

Joe TanseyFeb 7, 2018

The Ohio State Buckeyes won't be busy on national signing day.

Head coach Urban Meyer locked up most of his recruits in the class of 2018 during the December signing period, which means there isn't a ton of work left to be done.

The biggest need left on the board for the Buckeyes is at offensive tackle, and if things go their way, they will get one of the top unsigned players at that position on Wednesday.

Other than that, the Buckeyes will be inactive while the other top programs in the nation make a mad dash to the finish line.

Top Remaining Recruits

Nicholas Petit-Frere, OT, Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Florida)

The top offensive line prospect left on the board has Ohio State in the mix as well as four other big-name finalists.

Reeling in offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere out of his home state will be difficult with Florida in the hunt for his signature. Alabama, Michigan and Notre Dame are also in the mix for Petit-Frere.

Losing out on Petit-Frere would mean the Buckeyes have Max Wray as the only offensive tackle recruit. The only other offensive lineman in the class of 2018 is New York native Matthew Jones.

However, if the Buckeyes somehow pull off the commitment of Petit-Frere, they'd secure the top recruiting class in the nation regardless of what Georgia and Texas do.

Rasheed Walker, OT, North Point (Waldorf, Maryland)

Ohio State could lose out on an offensive tackle to a Big Ten East rival on Wednesday.

Maryland native Rasheed Walker appears set to sign with Penn State over the Buckeyes, but a late push could occur to sway his thinking.

Walker confirmed on his personal Twitter account last week that his decision was down to the Nittany Lions, Buckeyes and Virginia Tech.

The 6'6" lineman received final visits from Meyer and Penn State head coach James Franklin last week, but barring a late change of heart, it looks like the Buckeyes will come up short on the high-profile lineman.

Javontae Jean-Baptiste, LB, Bergen Catholic (Oradell, New Jersey)

Although the Buckeyes could miss out on their offensive line prospects, they might be able to swing a linebacker from another Big Ten school.

Linebacker Javontae Jean-Baptiste has been trending toward Ohio State and away from Nebraska in the last 24 hours, according to Bill Landis of Cleveland.com.

The Cornhuskers and new head coach Scott Frost are still in the hunt for Jean-Baptiste as the former UCF coach tries to secure the best recruiting class possible for his first season in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Texas A&M made a late push for the New Jersey native, but it appears the Aggies won't be a challenger for his signature on Wednesday.

If Jean-Baptiste shifts toward the Buckeyes, he'd join K'Vaughn Pope, Teradja Mitchell and Dallas Gant as linebackers in Ohio State's class of 2018.

Prediction

Ohio State could land Petit-Frere and Jean-Baptiste on Wednesday, but it could also strike out on the top three prospects left on its board.

Regardless of which players commit to the Buckeyes on national signing day, they will be in great shape heading into next season.

With 24 players already committed, 21 of which were gained by the end of the December signing period, Ohio State stands a chance to hold on to the No. 1 team ranking.

The Buckeyes could lose the No. 1 spot to Georgia if the Bulldogs land a few prized commitments, but even if that occurs, Ohio State will finish no lower than second in the team rankings.
