Trae Young's 32 Points Not Enough as WVU Beats Oklahoma for Season Sweep

Scott PolacekFeb 5, 2018

Trae Young was brilliant once again Monday at the Lloyd Noble Center, but not even 32 points from the freshman guard could stop the Oklahoma Sooners from dropping to 2-5 in their last seven games.

The West Virginia Mountaineers earned a 75-73 road victory, snapping their own stretch of 2-5 in the previous seven and finishing a season sweep of the Sooners in the process.

Oklahoma had the opportunity to tie or win on the game's final possession, but Rashard Odomes missed a shot in the paint when Young dished it to him after the defense collapsed on his penetration. It was the team's first home loss of the season.

West Virginia is now 7-4 in the Big 12, while Oklahoma fell to 6-5. Both teams are chasing the 7-3 Texas Tech Red Raiders and Kansas Jayhawks as the rest of the league attempts to prevent Kansas from winning at least a share of the conference crown for the 14th straight season.

The primary storyline entering the game was how Young would deal with West Virginia's pressure. The Mountaineers frequently extend their defense into the backcourt and push up on ball-handlers, which put more of the onus on Young to make decisions earlier in the shot clock.

He struggled at times and finished with six turnovers, while Jevon Carter spearheaded West Virginia with six steals. Carter also showed flashes on the other end with 10 points and eight assists, while Lamont West led the Mountaineers with 17 points.

Despite the turnovers, Young did most of the offensive damage for the Sooners.

He drilled four three-pointers and showed no hesitation pulling up from well beyond the arc to connect over the extended defense. He also slashed into the lane when there was too much attention on his perimeter shooting, turning heads multiple times with acrobatic finishes.

However, Young finished with a mere one assist, and it came in the closing minutes of the contest. Dana O'Neil of The Athletic pointed to an established pattern for Oklahoma when its offense relies too much on one player:

To the Sooners' credit, they battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit and improved on the defensive end in the final 20 minutes after allowing 50 first-half points. Still, there wasn't enough support for Young down the stretch, as Brady Manek (12 points) was the only other scorer in double figures.

On Saturday Oklahoma will look to snap out of its recent slide with a showdown at Iowa State, while the Mountaineers will attempt to build on their win when they host Oklahoma State.
