Swansea City Spoil Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Arsenal Debut with 3-1 Shock Win

Gianni VerschuerenJan 30, 2018

Henrikh Mkhitaryan made his Arsenal debut on Tuesday, but the Gunners lost in south Wales to Swansea City, as Sam Clucas scored twice in the 3-1 upset.

Nacho Monreal gave the Gunners a short-lived lead in the first half, but Clucas equalised less than 60 seconds later.

A blunder from Petr Cech gave Jordan Ayew his goal on a platter after the break before Clucas scored again to secure the win.

Here's a look at the teams, via James Olley of the London Evening Standard:

The Welsh hosts came out firing, threatening Arsenal early. Ayew had a shot blocked after a quick counter, and only a last-ditch tackle from Aaron Ramsey prevented a goal minutes later, when Alfie Mawson seemed certain to open the scoring.

Mohamed Elneny made a superb tackle to deny Clucas, and Ki Sung-yueng tried his luck from range, narrowly firing wide.

The Mirror's John Cross wasn't hopeful of Arsenal's chances after the Swans' bright start, especially given the conditions:

Arsenal improved after their shaky start, although it took until the half-hour mark for the first real chances to develop. Alex Iwobi drew a nice save from Lukasz Fabiansk, while at the other end of the pitch, Mawson and Ayew both wasted good looks of their own.

The Gunners' opener, courtesy of a fine finish from Monreal at the back post, came against the run of play. Mesut Ozil played a lovely cross into the box, and the full-back expertly converted.

But, as shared by Bleacher Report's Dean Jones, the celebrations from the visiting fans were short-lived:

Both Ozil and Granit Xhaka blundered away, allowing Mawson to tee up Clucas, who didn't miss.

Leroy Fer put Cech to work with a weak finish after he recovered the ball, and Xhaka had a horrible miss right before half-time, firing over after great work from Ozil and Iwobi.

Swansea's good form continued after the break, and Clucas came close to doubling his tally, steering a header narrowly wide. Xhaka didn't fare any better with his headed effort. and Nathan Dyer also missed from a promising position with a driving effort.

The Gunners need a boost, and after 60 minutes, Mkhitaryan made his team debut, per Olley:

Just one minute later, Ayew gave the hosts a deserved lead, courtesy of another defensive howler. Cech was surrounded by players and decided to pass the ball right to the striker, who gladly took the gift.

Jones couldn't believe it:

Cech continued to blunder, making a meal out of a free-kick that fortunately only went out for a corner. Dyer had a golden opportunity to double the lead, but his shot flew wide.

Manager Arsene Wenger threw Olivier Giroud on in desperation, playing with a front four in search of goals. None of those forwards were able to get on the end of Mkhitaryan's excellent cross with 10 minutes left to play, however.

Swansea had more success, taking advantage of yet more defensive errors to fire a cross into the box, where Clucas converted for his second goal.

Giroud had a late chance to pull one back but fired wide, before the official brought an end to an embarrassing night for the visitors.

Arsenal's next match is at home against Everton, while Swansea visit Leicester City.
