WWE president Vince McMahon announced Thursday he will reboot his football league, which previously ran for one season in 2001, beginning early in 2020.
Unfortunately, McMahon said he wouldn't allow any player with a criminal record, which Manziel has after accepting a plea to his domestic assault charge.
"We are evaluating a player based on many things, including the quality of human being they are," McMahon said, per ESPN's Darren Rovell. "If you have any sort of criminal record or commit a crime you aren't playing in this league."
After the first iteration of the league lacked many big names, this could be a lost opportunity with Manziel being a former Heisman Trophy winner and first round pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
He spent two years with the Browns, going 2-6 as a starter with a 74.4 quarterback rating. He was eventually released after off-field problems overshadowed his on-field contributions.
After some time away from football, Manziel announced that he had gotten sober, clearing the way for a potential move to the Canadian Football League. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced earlier this month that they offered the quarterback a contract.
Although he is yet to agree upon a deal, he could potentially just be biding his time before the new XFL begins.
With his personality and name recognition—not to mention his exciting abilities on the field as a dual-threat quarterback—he could be exactly what the new league needs.
