Canadian Figure Skating Championships 2018: Final Results, Highlights, Reaction

Tyler ConwayJan 14, 2018

For the 10th time, Patrick Chan is the best male Canadian skater. The 27-year-old captured his 10th championship at the 2018 Canadian Figure Skating Championships on Saturday, joining Gabrielle Daleman as the two big winners from the competition.

"I won my first senior title [here]. I've won my 10th here again and I want to live here," Chan said after winning, per Reuters. "What a way to kick it off.

"Today was not the dream skate I imagine but when you look at every champion in every sport, it's up and downs that create champions and how you weather the storms, weather the challenges."

Chan finished with an overall score of 274.24 points following his free skate, which put him well ahead of second-place Keegan Messing (259.25). Nam Nguyen recovered from a shaky short program to finish in third place, losing out to Messing by just over a point.

"It's obviously not the dream skate you expect for Number 10," Chan said, per the Canadian Press. "Of course I would have loved to have landed and nailed every single jump, but I did what I had to do. I had a lot of my own demons to battle coming here, so I think I was able to accomplish a big goal and a big step forward, so I feel good."

Daleman finished her skate with first-place finishes in the short program and free skate on her way to defeating Olympic medal hopeful Kaetlyn Osmond. Daleman and Osmond were by far the two top competitors, with third-place finisher Larkyn Austman coming in nearly 50 points behind Osmond.

"You're competing against number two in the world. This means the absolute world to me going into an Olympic year,” Daleman told reporters.

Daleman turned 20 on Saturday, the same day she earned her second national championship.

"I said yesterday, that's the way to end 19, and what I said today was this is the way to start 20. It was the best birthday present I could ever ask for," Daleman said, per Scott Stinson of the Ottawa Citizen.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won their eighth national championship in ice dancing. Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford won the pairs skate.

Virtue and Moir have medaled at each of the last two Olympic Games.
