Liverpool Transfer News: Reds Eyeing Alejandro Gomez in Latest Rumours
Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Atalanta forward Alejandro Gomez in the January transfer window.
According to Tuttosport (h/t Football Italia), Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is interested in landing the 29-year-old, who has been excellent for the Bergamo-based club.
Liverpool have a void to fill in the attacking portion of the pitch, after they sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in a deal worth £142 million.
Gomez would be an exciting addition, as he has blossomed into a talismanic figure for Atalanta in recent seasons. This term he's already grabbed seven goals and laid on eight assists for his team-mates in all competitions.
As noted below, he has forged a brilliant relationship with attacking midfielder Bryan Cristante, per OptaPaolo:
Technically, the Argentina international is a wonderful footballer and there are definite similarities between him and Coutinho.
Gomez has operated as a left winger and a No. 10 for the team this season. From both areas of the pitch he’s proved to be so effective, with his balance, flair and vision making him such a difficult man to pin down.

The man nicknamed Papu has been at Atalanta since 2014 and has been a late bloomer in his career. As such, he's never played for what would be considered an elite European side.
Journalist Rupert Fryer is unsure whether the forward would be quite as effective if he were to move to a more illustrious club:
Gomez has a huge affinity with Atalanta, having helped the team to a fourth-place finish last season. They qualified for the UEFA Europa League as a result and progressed into the knockout stages as group winners; they memorably beat Everton 3-0 and 5-1, with Gomez exceptional in both games.
Despite the relationship between the captain and the supporters, if an offer were to come in from a club such as Liverpool, Gomez would surely have to consider it as he's well into the peak years of his career.

The Reds would benefit from adding another creative player to their ranks as well, as Coutinho was so often the man that made the team tick in the final third.
The Guardian's Sachin Nakrani doesn't believe Liverpool should rush into the transfer market for the sake of it, though:
Gomez is a major talent and has shown consistently in Serie A he has the class to influence matches at the highest level. Even so, Liverpool would surely have sufficient reservations to steer clear of this one.
Not only would they have to pay an extortionate sum for a player who turns 30 on February 15, Gomez has yet to play for a major team, while his diminutive stature is not suited to the combative nature of English football. If he were to end up in all red, it would be a surprise.
