Chelsea and Arsenal will lock horns for the second time in a week on Wednesday in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

The two sides went up against one another in the Premier League last Wednesday and played out a pulsating 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium. Those who frequent Stamford Bridge will be hoping for a similarly absorbing encounter.

Of course, the two sets of fans will be desperate to see their respective teams take an advantage into the second leg. Given neither side has realistic hopes of winning the Premier League title, this competition takes on added significance, too.

In recent years, matches between Chelsea and Arsenal have often been tense and tight affairs. In the Premier League a week ago, they conjured up a classic.

Hector Bellerin snatched a late equaliser for the Gunners in a breathless match and one both sets of supporters would have been disappointed to lose. As noted below, the contest had a bit of everything:

Wednesday's meeting at Stamford Bridge has a lot to live up to as a result, although a semi-final should bring out the best in some of the excellent players on show.

Both teams have had to battle to make it this far. Chelsea eventually made it into the last four with a stoppage-time winner from Alvaro Morata against Bournemouth, just seconds after the Cherries had equalised through Dan Gosling.

It was one of the moments of the season for the Blues and a sign this is a team desperate to do well in this competition.

It will be interesting to see what sort of XI Chelsea manager Antonio Conte does field. As noted by Liam Twomey of ESPN FC, in the past he's insisted fringe players who have been involved in the competition throughout should keep their place:

However, with the finishing line in sight and numerous key men rested on Saturday in the FA Cup tie against Norwich City, there may be a place for some star performers to come back in.

The same goes for Arsenal. Manager Arsene Wenger will want to continue the club's positive recent record in cup competitions, and while finishing in the top four will no doubt be a priority for the Gunners, chances to win trophies must be cherished.

In the previous round, when Arsenal won 1-0 against West Ham United, Wenger used the game to give run-outs to the likes of Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott. Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Independent believes the former still has something to offer the Gunners:

Chelsea are a tough side to beat at Stamford Bridge, and with that in mind, Wenger should be looking to field a strong XI to ensure his team remain in the tie.

The approach Arsenal take will be fascinating. While they were happy to fly forward at home to Chelsea a week ago, they were content to sit deep and seek to stifle their opponents when they visited Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign, eventually earning a 0-0 draw.

Wenger would take that again, you sense, and Arsenal may put a little more emphasis on defence than they normally would as a result. Even so, on home soil you would back the Blues to find a way of taking a lead back to the Emirates.
