Drew Lock Says He 'Must Be Doing Something Right' After Tom Herman Mocked Him
Texas head coach Tom Herman appeared to mock Missouri quarterback Drew Lock's celebration at the end of the the Longhorns' 33-16 Texas Bowl win on Wednesday night, though Lock didn't seem too bothered after the game.
"You can look at it like this is a pretty big program, and when the head coach is mocking your dance move, you must be doing something right," Lock told reporters, per ESPN. "You're not a nobody. You're definitely doing something that is catching people's attention."
Lock broke out his "secure the bag" celebration following a 79-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. But late in the fourth, many of the Texas players and Herman mocked the celebration from the sideline after scoring a touchdown.
Suffice it to say, Herman's pantomime received a mixed response on Twitter:
Lock, to his credit, didn't seem terribly bothered by Herman's mockery, though he also implied he wouldn't forget it.
"There's both sides of that. If you're going to do that, you're being a players' coach, really," he said. "If I was on the team, I would have [dug] it. ... 'Coach is balling with us, he's out here having fun.' But at the same time, you know, you've got to realize how the other side is going to take it."
Texas was perhaps responding to more than just Lock's touchdown celebration, however. Per ESPN: "The trash talking—or signing—actually started before the game, when Missouri players were seen giving a horns-down sign. The Longhorns must have noticed."
Trash talk and gesturing are fair play between the players on each team. But there is a debate to be had about whether it's appropriate for coaches to get involved in those exchanges, especially given the power dynamic at play in college football, where the coaches are paid professionals and the players are classified as unpaid amateurs.
