Report: Willie Taggart, Deion Sanders Have Interest in Return to FSU as DB Coach
Deion Sanders is one of the most legendary stars to suit up for the Florida State Seminoles, and the Hall of Fame cornerback may desire to return to the school as a coach.
Noles247's Josh Newberg reported Wednesday "Sanders has a serious interest," and the 50-year-old has spoken to Florida State head coach Willie Taggart about the possibility. According to Newberg, Taggart has interest in bringing Sanders to the staff.
"You never know," Sanders said, per Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman. "I've been known to make big plays with these colors on. That's all I'm gonna say."
Sanders was also cryptic when asked about the prospect earlier this month:
Taggart tweeted Wednesday he had met with Sanders:
Hiring Sanders would be a gamble for Taggart as he approaches his first season at Florida State. Sanders has only coached at the high school level, most recently serving as the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill in Cedar Hill, Texas.
Sanders' lack of experience could be a stumbling block early on, but his name alone could help the Seminoles on the recruiting trail—something they may need after this year's early signing day.
According to 247Sports' composite rankings, former head coach Jimbo Fisher assembled the sixth-best recruiting class in 2017. After a number of top recruits have already signed their letters of intent, Florida State is 34th in 2018.
Sanders' success in college and the NFL could be invaluable for attracting blue-chip recruits, especially those who line up in the secondary.
Even if Sanders doesn't join the Seminoles' staff, he could still be an asset to the program as a de facto ambassador for Florida State football.
