Manchester United Transfer News: Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Galatasaray Rumours
Galatasaray will make a move for Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic if presidential candidate Mehmet Cengiz wins the race to become the club's new figurehead.
Incumbent president Dursun Ozbek called for an election to be held in January, and Cengiz has set his sights high with a planned move for Ibrahimovic in 2018.
Emre Sarigul of Turkish-Football.com provided quotes from the Gala contender, who recently said: "I keep my word. Galatasaray need three to four transfers. I still say I want Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic could play at Galatasaray. I still say Ibrahimovic."
The former Sweden international returned to Old Trafford on a new one-year deal after suffering a serious knee injury in April.
Ibrahimovic's contract with the Red Devils is set to expire in the summer, making him available on a free transfer, as noted by Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News:
The 36-year-old has featured in only six matches this season after returning from injury in November, and he scored his first goal of the campaign in Wednesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Bristol City.
That free-kick served as a reminder Ibrahimovic—still getting back to full fitness—has something to offer even in his advanced years, and football writer Liam Canning touched on other areas in which he provides value:
Gala have in the past signed experienced figures such as Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder as marquee names, although they would need to offer a competitive salary for a player likely to have options in the summer.
Despite the success he enjoyed in his first season at the club, there is a question as to whether United will even want to extend Ibrahimovic's stay beyond this season as Luckhurst hinted at what could be waning powers:
A move to the Super Lig could provide Ibrahimovic with an outlet to still play competitive football at a high standard.
Having already played in La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1, a move to Turkey would offer him a route into a new league, with the frontman sat high on the list of priorities for presidential hopeful Cengiz.
