Chuck Liddell on Floyd Mayweather in UFC: 'He's Just Gonna Get Hurt'

Joseph ZuckerDec 21, 2017

Count Chuck Liddell among the skeptics about whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. will ever step inside the Octagon for a UFC fight.

"C'mon man—he can't fight in the UFC," Liddell said, per TMZ Sports. "Why would he do that? He's just gonna get hurt."

Liddell's comments come after UFC President Dana White spoke with ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto about the prospect of a UFC appearance for Mayweather.

White said he and Mayweather were discussing a possible deal. He also noted that while negotiations are at an early stage, Mayweather's fight with Conor McGregor once looked like a long shot before it eventually happened.

Mayweather clarified his stance about fighting in the UFC during an interview with FightHype.com, saying he could make a billion dollars by fighting three or four fights before getting a rematch with McGregor. Mayweather added he was only speaking hypothetically.

"I'm just saying I could; I'm not doing it, but I'm saying what I could do to make a billion dollars quick," Mayweather said. "I never said I was going to fight in the UFC. Would and could do is different things. I'm not going to do it though."

Mayweather and McGregor signed a confidentiality agreement, so their total earnings from their Aug. 26 superfight may never be known. ESPN.com's Dan Rafael reported Mayweather was set to make at least $100 million, and his payout could climb to over $200 million.

That purse should guarantee Mayweather can live comfortably for the rest of his life, so he has little reason to begin pondering a mixed martial arts career at age 40. Okamoto also expressed doubt whether the Nevada State Athletic Commission would even sanction a Mayweather fight in the UFC since he'd be facing such a steep learning curve.
