Louisville Files Lawsuit Against Rick Pitino for Monetary Damages After Scandal

The University of Louisville has reportedly filed a lawsuit against former head basketball coach Rick Pitino after the school was sanctioned by the NCAA in June.

According to WDRB.com's Jason Riley, Louisville is seeking unspecified monetary damages from Pitino following the NCAA's ruling that the program had to vacate up to 123 wins, including the school's 2013 national championship, that were participated in by players who received improper benefits. 

When the sanctions initially dropped, the New York Times' Marc Tracy reported the school was being disciplined "after it was revealed that a former director of basketball operations had provided strippers and prostitutes to players and recruits in a campus dormitory over several years."

Pitino, who has since been fired after he was identified as part of a years-long FBI investigation into corruption and bribery in college basketball, was also suspended for the first five games of ACC play. 

In addition to the legal action against Pitino, the Cardinals filed an appeal with the NCAA to have penalties they referred to as "grossly excessive" reduced, according to Gary B. Graves of the Associated Press. 

That appeal proceeded as planned on Wednesday when members of the school's administration reportedly met with the NCAA Appeals Committee.
