Lucky Man: Button Clinches F1 Title

Chet AlvizOct 19, 2009

Being the 10th Brit in the long line of British Formula One world champs, Jenson Button may have heaved a huge sigh of relief in the recently held Brazilian Grand Prix.

There were no suspense-filled endings, no damp roads where cars would slip and slide from track to wall and (hope and pray) back again, no pit lane dramas where every second lost is another man's gain.

He finally did it.

Came in fifth and finally did it.  Starting from 14th place, the man had ruthlessly, and in the true "Killer-Jenson Button-ator" fashion, carved his way masterfully from one position to the next, overtaking cars like there was no tomorrow.  Skill beyond skill, one manoeuvre after another, the would-be champion showed the world why he deserves the crown most teams (and sponsors) spend millions to acquire.

Now let's get on with reality, shall we?

Truth is, the "Button-nator" is really, truly, at best, a good man in a great car.  At least, for the first few grand prixs.  His true form showed --- win after win after win after win, (you know how it goes) Jenson is on top of the world.  The track: his kingdom.  The car: his noble steed.  No one could touch him.

Then the world came crashing down.

Pressure, like a sickness, eats at you.  Consumes you. And comes in the form of a charging Red Bull, an emerging Mclaren, even a twitchy Ferrari. And worse, the same Brawn.  On it, an aging, stubborn, smiling warrior.  Rubinh-O.

But the good man in the great car kept his nerve.  Let's face it, the wind that carried him and his noble steed many around his kingdom held steadfast.  A sixth place here, a fifth place there, and he is safe.  Misfortune and error in the part of his enemies...kept him safe.  Don't overtake, stay the course, save the engine.  Your fifth is still good.  Still...Safe.

And so we have our Champ.  Win six of the first seven races, place no higher than fifth in the next nine, save for a second place (behind the smiling warrior), and win the title.  Job well done for the first half of the season, and get ready to celebrate.

Start strong. Then play second fiddle to your teammate.  Finish with a whimper.  Become world champion.

Jenson finally did it.  Lucky Man.
