John Morrison: The Shawn Michaels Comparisons Need to Stop
John Morrison’s stock is steadily rising in the WWE, and with that rise there have been countless comparisons here on Bleacher Report as well as on WWE programming that Morrison is the next Shawn Michaels.
Morrison’s future is indeed bright, and he may very well be the future of the WWE, but he is not, I repeat not, Shawn Michaels.
This is no fault of Morrison’s, in fact this is a testament to his work ethic and talent to even be mentioned in the same breath as the Heartbreak Kid, but by doing this we may be setting ourselves up for disappointment.
HBK’s laundry list of accomplishments in the ring speaks for itself, even the most successful wrestler would be lucky to accomplish half of what HBK has during his career.
HBK’s career is more then just title reigns. He is nicknamed the Showstopper because he is consistently putting on great matches on the biggest stages.
Take a quick glance at some of the most memorable matches in the history of the WWF/E, and you will constantly see that HBK is in those matches.
Whether it was revolutionizing the Ladder Match at Wrestlemania X, partaking in the first ever Hell in a Cell Match with the Undertaker, or ending Ric Flair’s career at Wrestlemania XXIV; Michaels has done it all.
Shawn Michaels also had the ability to bring the absolute best out of his opponent. Yes we all know the results are predetermined, but it seems like every time someone faces HBK, they straight up bring it.
Take a look at HBK’s feud with John Cena a few years back. While Cena may not be the most talented individual, he definitely stepped his game up to keep up with HBK.
Now, Morrison has had his fair share of success so far in his career, a few Intercontinental Title runs, an ECW Championship, and a successful run in the tag team division, but he has not had that “WOW” moment yet.
Comparing John Morrison to Shawn Michaels is like comparing anyone to Michael Jordan; you just can’t do that.
How many times have players been called the next Jordan, only to flame out or only find moderate success; sure some players like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James can stand up to the hype, but neither play the same type of game as Jordan.
They each have their own identity; which is all John Morrison should worry about.
It certainly appears that Morrison is ready to take the next step in his progression to superstardom, but just because someone is talented and has potential doesn’t mean they are destined for greatness.
Whenever we make comparisons between a legend and an athlete with a bright future, we usually set the bar too high and we end up being disappointed.
For Morrison to truly be successful and achieve greatness, maybe we should all stop worrying if he will be the next Shawn Michaels and just let him be John Morrison.
