What's Next for Neville? Dream Matches in Japan, Indies After Rumored WWE Exit

Ryan DilbertOct 19, 2017

The pro wrestling world outside of WWE has to be rooting for the rumors of Neville's departure from the company to be true.

Should The King of Cruiserweights leave the sports entertainment giant and make his way back to the independent scene or venture to Japan, dream matches aplenty await him. Neville facing the best high-flyers and junior heavyweights of the world promises to leave fans buzzing.

Neville vs. Will Ospreay. Neville vs. Kota Ibushi. It's hard not to start salivating at the thought of those showdowns.

And they may soon become a reality.

Joseph Currier reported for Figure Four Online earlier this month: "Sources confirmed to us that Neville walked out before Raw on Monday and appeared to have quit the promotion, though WWE has officially denied that he's quit."

The two-time cruiserweight champion hasn't appeared for WWE since. It makes one wonder if a divorce between company and Superstar isn't imminent.

The bright side to that situation is all the tremendous work Neville could produce with New Japan Pro Wrestling, Evolve or elsewhere.

Kota Ibushi

1 of 5

When WWE reintroduced the cruiserweight division last year, it would have taken off in a big way had Neville been a part of it from the get-go and had Ibushi been signed. The Golden Star, though, didn't stick around after the Cruiserweight Classic.

Ibushi is one of the few wrestlers in the world who can match Neville in athleticism.

He bounds around the ring effortlessly. He, like Neville, takes the air with impressive grace.

He showed off how stellar a performer he is in some of the Cruiserweight Classic's best matches and during his work in Japan. He and The Man Who Gravity Forgot would put together something special in a dizzying, breakneck battle.

Keith Lee

2 of 5

Every other wrestler on this list is a cruiserweight who would light it up against Neville in a high-energy clash. Keith Lee would make for a great contrast opponent, with the rising star playing the Goliath to Neville's David.

The Texas-born powerhouse is quickly establishing himself as one of independent wrestling's hottest acts. Paste columnists Garrett Martin and Paul DeBenedetto wrote of Lee: "He's a major player, whose presence on any card is reason alone to buy a ticket."

And Lee has shown he can thrive against smaller, speedier men. He's done well against the likes of Fenix, Travis Banks and Lio Rush. Plus, although he's a big-framed titan, he is surprisingly agile and can infuse plenty of acrobatic moves into a match.

Lee and Neville would be quite the marquee matchup for a company like Pro Wrestling Guerrilla or Evolve.

Kenny Omega

3 of 5

Kenny Omega boasts a resume overflowing with classics.

His work with NJPW has been outstanding. High spots and storytelling have helped him create masterpieces against Kazuchika Okada, Tetsuya Naito and Tomohiro Ishii.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter founder Dave Meltzer has had to reinvent his ratings scale to accommodate the greatness of Omega's matches.

The Cleaner and Neville would kill it together. They are both on the hottest stretches of their career, and their clash would be a high-octane, dramatic work of art.

Former NXT creative assistant Rob Naylor made it clear he'd be fully on board with Neville vs. Omega.

Will Ospreay

4 of 5

Will Ospreay vs. Neville would be a spectacle of swiftness, a display of men doing superhuman things.

Ospreay is in the conversation for best high-flyer working today. He's impressively quick and has an eye-catching in-ring toolbox.

He has got to be near the top of Neville's wishlist should his WWE days officially end.

It's clear The Commonwealth King is already thinking about that showdown. Amid the rumors of Neville's exit, Ospreay tweeted: "If it's true. Could we finally see The Man That Gravity Forgot vs. The Aerial Assassin?"

As a bonus, if Ospreay can remain unbeaten until their collision, the match could be for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

Zack Sabre Jr.

5 of 5

Neville is famous for his flying, but he's an excellent mat wrestler, too. A match with Zack Sabre Jr. would be a great chance to show off that side of his game.

No one makes reversals, wristlocks and submissions more exciting than Sabre Jr. right now.

He remains one of the most consistent and productive performers out there. WWE fans saw that during his run in the Cruiserweight Classic tournament. Those who follow his work elsewhere have seen him tear the roof against grapplers like Marty Scurll, Ricochet and Ibushi.

Sabre Jr. vs. Neville is something both men have to want. The Briton-against-Briton matchup would absolutely sizzle.

Neville's options post-WWE, though, are plentiful. The aforementioned Scurll and Ricochet, as well as Rey Mysterio and Kushida, would all make great opponents for The King of the Cruiserweights. Life outside of Vince McMahon's circus promises to treat him rather well.
