WWE Rumors: Examining Latest Buzz Around John Cena, Four Horsewomen and More

Erik BeastonSep 5, 2017

A whole new fan base beyond the WWE Universe may be gearing up to witness John Cena vs. The Rock III, if this week's WWE rumor mill is accurate.

Could Cena be joining a major, DC Comics-based blockbuster that would see him go toe-to-toe with The Rock's iconic villain?

It appears as though it could be a real possibility.

Less a possibility and more a likelihood is a showdown between Ronda Rousey and The Four Horsewomen of MMA and the original Four Horsewomen of NXT. News regarding the full-time WWE competitors involved in that potential showdown made its way to the surface this week.

On the heels of a masterful performance against Braun Strowman on the Labor Day episode of Raw, Big Show was in the news for a potential injury that may require surgery.

Delve deeper into these reports now.

John Cena to Star in Major Blockbuster?

1 of 3

According to Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats, John Cena may be coming to a theatre near you in a major DC Comics blockbuster sooner than later.

"John Cena is said to be a frontrunner for the role of the superhero Shazam in the planned DC Comics movie. The Rock has long been attached to the franchise as one of Shazam’s supporting cast, the villain/anti-hero Black Adam."

So...the masses could be in store for a battle of massive proportions pitting Cena vs. The Rock?

For real?

Because that sounds friggin awesome.

Cena and Rock have undeniable chemistry. Their war of words heading into WrestleMania 28 helped make that supposed "Once in a Lifetime" match the success it ultimately was.

They each also have magnetic personalities that draw fans. They are largely likeable and play off each other extremely well. Any potential media build to the film could be enormously fun with those two stars at the forefront.

Of course, in the world of Hollywood, things can change on a dime. There is no guarantee wrestling, comic and film fans alike will get to see Cena-Rock III play out on the big screen. That the report is out there, though, bodes well for Cena's blossoming film career.

Battle of the Four Horsewomen

2 of 3

Viewers of the latest series of Mae Young Classic episodes may have noticed a tense situation involving the Four Horsewomen of MMA (Ronda Rousey, Jessamyn Duke, Marina Shafir and Shayna Baszler) and the Four Horsewomen of NXT (Charlotte, Bayley, Becky Lynch and the absent Sasha Banks).

After the latest episodes were released to WWE Network, the company's official website released an exclusive video that saw Rousey issue a challenge to the rival Horsewomen for a fight.

Ortman of Cageside Seats had an update on a prospective match between the two foursomes.

"Expect Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and (when healthy) Bayley to be kept away from their respective brand’s title scenes while their program with The MMA Four Horsewomen plays out."

Not only does that report suggest the match will happen but WWE is taking the necessary steps to keep its top female performers away from the championship scene in order to free them up for the impending contest.

That is not a bad thing.

The women's divisions on both Raw and SmackDown Live have become bogged down in repetition due to the overuse and overexposure of Bayley, Banks, Charlotte and Lynch since their respective arrivals. Allowing Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Emma, Natalya and Naomi to seize the reigns of the title pictures while breaking the others off to other stories will rejuvenate the divisions and freshen television up.

Then there is that proposed match itself.

It would be, perhaps, the highest-profile female bout WWE could present and draw interest beyond the WWE Universe. The absolute right move at the right time as the Women's Revolution needs to enjoy its next step in evolution to prevent staleness.

Surgery for Big Show

3 of 3

The end of the September 4 episode of Raw saw Braun Strowman hoist Big Show on his shoulder and throw him through the side of a steel cage, causing the giant to land on the unforgiving structure.

According to Pro Wrestling Sheet's James McKenna, the angle was devised to set up The World's Largest Athlete's impending absence due to a medical procedure.

Quoting McKenna's Twitter account, "just a fyi - hearing big show is getting surgery for a slight hip issue very very soon. expect a braun mauling finish tonight."

Anyone Big Show's size, who takes two decades worth of bumps the way he has over the course of his career, is destined to endure bumps, bruises, wear and tear that ultimately requires surgery.

Thankfully, according to McKenna's report, it is a slight issue that should not need the long-term rehabilitation time other procedures may have.

Big Show has been delivering some of the finest work of his Hall of Fame career the older he gets. Perhaps he is working smarter. Maybe he is listening to, and adjusting his style for, the audience.

Whatever the case may be, his recent bouts with Strowman have been nothing short of fantastic and Monday night, he used his impending absence to put The Monster Among Men over incredibly strongly.
