Windy City Screw Job: No Mercy Recap

Ron JohnsonOct 8, 2007

Icon Sports MediaOn a night when thoughts of the Cubs' collapse was still fresh in their minds, Vince McMahon found himself smiling, infuriated, and smiling again as the WWE gave the Chicago fans something to cheer about. Here's the recap of last night's historic No Mercy.

The evening started off with Vince McMahon coming to a decision on the WWE Championship. He chose to award it to a "deserving" superstar rather than have the entire Raw Locker Room duke it out for the gold. Enter Randy Orton: The man responsible for sidelining John Cena for a year. Though Orton thought he had earned the championship, there was one man who felt that he was nothing more than a whiny little punk. Enter Triple H. The Game pushed enough buttons on McMahon to have him grant the championship match between the King and the Legend Killer.

Triple H defeats Randy Orton for the WWE Championship

Orton dished out as much punishment as he could against The Game, but it was a mistake on the ring post that ended Orton's short-lived title reign. Triple H rolled up the Legend Killer to pick up the win and the championship. Triple H pulled one over the Chairman and his hand picked champion in the process of becoming WWE Champion for the 11th Time.

Mr. Kennedy, Lance Cade, & Trevor Murdoch def. Jeff Hardy, Paul London, & Brian Kendrick

In a match that was added that night, the Intercontinental Champion teamed with the former WWE Tag Team Champions to face Raw's World Tag Team Champions and the Chicago's Most Hated. If there is anything that Chicago hates more than the Green Bay Packers, it's anyone from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Kennedy and his tag team partners had a hard time handling the high flying trio, but the power game truly did not belong to them. Kennedy hit his Green Bay Plunge, and despite the Packers' loss to the Bears, gave Green Bay a victory in hostile territory.

CM Punk defeats Big Daddy V for ECW Championship

If there was anything that the Chicago fans needed, their hometown hero delivered some much needed CPR to a city in need of it. Big Daddy V had the match in hand, until his handler, Matt Striker, nailed Punk from behind costing the Massive Behemoth the match and the championship. Unfortunately for Punk, he didn't have much time to celebrate. The Chicago native suffered a series of massive splashes that left the champion busted open and in a state of emergency. This quiet rivalry may have gotten worse due to this dangerous attack, however, expect some backlash when ECW broadcasts on Sci-Fi this Tuesday.

Triple H defeats Umaga for WWE Championship

The Game won the WWE title earlier that night, but Vince McMahon was hellbent on making this a short lived victory for the Game as he made Umaga's match a title match. Umaga came out firing as well as the Cerebral Assassin. The Samoan Bulldozer was obviously remembering the brutal beatdown that Triple H gave him a few weeks ago that left him bloody and battered. Umaga must have been remembering too much as The King of Kings was able to defeat the Bulldozer to retain the championship, get another win over Umaga, and leave the Chairman in a fit of rage once again.

Beth Phoenix defeats Candice for Women's Championship

She came up short at Unforgiven, but remained determined to capture the gold. On Sunday, her quest was fulfilled. Despite throwing everything she had in her arsenal at the bulky Diva, the Glamazon rose to the occasion and defeated the Candy-coated Diva to usher in the Glamazon era of the Women's Division. But who will step up next to face the Blonde Bomber? Tune into Raw on USA tomorrow night for details.

Batista defeats The Great Khali for the World Heavyweight Championship

It is considered the most dangerous structure in the WWE since the Elimination Chamber. Whoever steps into this "Chamber of Horror" is never the same afterwards. Last night, the Animal and the Punjabi Nightmare took each other to the woodshed with the Punjabi Giant scaling the first of two sets of walls. Despite that dangerous Khali Vise Grip being placed on him, as well as dropping 10 feet to the ground below, Batista still rose from defeat and began to scale the wall as well. The two men were neck and neck as they began their descent from the Punjabi Prison. In the end, it was a matter of seconds that determined the winner of this bout. And those seconds were all Batista needed to remain World Champion as he not only survived The Great Khali, but he also survived arguably the biggest Prison Break of his career.

Randy Orton defeats Triple H for WWE Championship

Orton decided to become Edge for a night as he used opportunity to defeat the King of Kings to become the WWE Champion for the 3rd time last night. After watching Umaga decimate the Game in his first title defense, Orton used his rematch clause to face the Game in a Last Man Standing Match. What? Did you think that Vince wouldn't have one last trick left up his sleeve? Orton busted the Game open and even used an RKO on the announcer's table to make sure that the King of Kings wasn't getting back up. In the end, Orton clutched the WWE Championship for the 2nd time at No Mercy and put everyone on Raw on notice: "No one is taking this from me now." However, don't be surprised if Triple H or anyone else on Raw is going to care what the undeserving champion has to say. The Target is now on the back, chest, and huge forehead of the Legend Killer.

There's your rundown. See ya next weekend.
