Could It Be "Deja Vu All Over Again" For Coach? Time Will Tell
So, the Iowa Hawkeyes are 6-0, already bowl-eligible, and the talk of not only Roses, but possibly, and I emphasize the word possibly, a trip to the national championship game, is already being mentioned.
I heard Brent Musberger, during the Iowa-Michigan game, say that Iowa "at least had to be inserted into the conversation" when discussing the championship. However, this brings to mind another possibility - if Ferentz keeps the Hawkeyes rolling towards a trip to the Rose Bowl, or the national championship, the rumors will undoubtedly start again immediately after whichever game the Hawks play in, if not before - Will he stay, or will he go?
Scenario 1: Hawkeyes win the BCS National Championship: Okay, this is probably the most unlikely scenario, but by the same token, anything is possible. So, if the Hawkeyes run the table and stay undefeated, and capture the national championship, something even the legendary Hayden Fry couldn't do, I would say to Kirk, Go for it! He, at that point, would have nothing left to prove in college ball (albeit a Rose Bowl victory), and might find the NFL's siren song too hard to resist.
Scenario 2: Hawkeyes win Rose Bowl, not playing for BCS title: This one may be a little more likely, and would provide Ferentz and his players with a goal to shoot for in the 2010-2011 season, since they would most likely be considered as top contendors for the national championship - Ferentz would likely stay, in order to chase "the big one."
Scenario 3: Hawks miss out on Rose Bowl, instead winning another Jan. 1 bowl: With Iowa's recent record in Jan. 1 bowl games, including the laugher over South Carolina last year, even if they don't make the Rose Bowl or BCS title game, if they finish with anywhere from 1-3 losses, they would most likely be considered for a New Year's Day bowl, but I still think Ferentz would stay, in order to chase the Rose and BCS title games.
Of course, these are all hypothetical scenarios, and Iowa has possibly the toughest part of their schedule remaining, including dates next week in Wisconsin, followed by an equally dangerous game in Lansing, MI against the Spartans, along with a very dangerous date at "The Horseshoe" to play Ohio State. 6-0 can become 6-6 extremely quickly, especially if any of the starters on offense become injured - the Hawks have no experience at quarterback should Ricky Stanzi go down, and that could torpedo the entire season. However, if either of the three scenarios I've outlined comes to pass, Iowa Hawkeye fans will hear a very familiar question regarding Coach Ferentz - "Will he stay, or will he go?"
