Quicken Loans National 2017: David Lingmerth Has 2-Stroke Lead over Geoff Ogilvy
David Lingmerth is the 36-hole leader at the Quicken Loans National in Potomac, Maryland, after he shot a five-under 65 Friday to move to 10 under through two rounds.
The back-to-back 65s vaulted Lingmerth two shots clear of Geoff Ogilvy, who is sitting at eight under after opening his stay at TPC Potomac in 67-65 fashion.
Here's an overview of the top of the leaderboard with moving day on deck:
One round after he dotted his scorecard with seven birdies and two bogeys, Lingmerth played one of the finest 18-hole stretches of his season to date.
Dialed in from start to finish, the 29-year-old played a clean round that saw him card five birdies, including back-to-back scoring efforts on Nos. 2 and 3.
Lingmerth, who has yet to card a top-10 finish this season, also closed things out with a birdie when he rolled one in on No. 18, as the PGA Tour documented on Twitter:
After his round, Lingmerth cited his familiarity with the course as one reason for the strong start:
Lingmerth's primary competition Saturday will be from Ogilvy, who is rounding into form after finishing outside the top 50 in each of his last three starts.
Following an opening-round 67, Ogilvy nearly joined Lingmerth in the blemish-free club as he poured in six birdies and carded a single bogey (No. 15) to move within two shots of the lead.
Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas reside on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Fowler, who finished fifth in his last start at the U.S. Open, finds himself 12 shots off the pace at two over after making 16 pars and two bogeys in Round 2.
One day removed from shooting an even-par 70 during a first-round showing that included five birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey, Fowler's second go at Potomac was defined by squandered opportunities to move into red figures.
The PGA Tour relayed video of a particularly rough missed birdie putt on the par-five 10th:
Then there was Thomas, who failed to qualify for the weekend after finishing a shot outside the cut line at five over. The missed cut represents the second straight for Thomas on the heels of a ninth-place finish at Erin Hills.
With those two big names out of contention, Lingmerth and Ogilvy should headline the weekend's action as they each eye a victory that could come to define their 2017 season.
