Carmelo Anthony Rumors: Phil Jackson Exit Hasn't Changed Knicks Mindset on Star
The New York Knicks parted ways with Phil Jackson on Wednesday, but at least one of the team's plans remains intact.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, the Knicks intend to trade Carmelo Anthony rather than try to negotiate a buyout.
ESPN's Marc Stein reported Tuesday that Anthony's agent had tried to engage in buyout talks with the team.
Jackson seemed to be forcing Anthony out the door over the past year, explaining his position earlier this offseason.
"We'd like him to have success," Jackson said of Anthony in May, per Ian Begley and Nick Friedell of ESPN.com. "The opportunity is narrowing. We'd just like him to have success somewhere. We're not going to be there. Hopefully, we'll be maybe a playoff team next year. It would be tough to consider us a possible champion."
Even with the change in leadership, the Knicks apparently still don't want the 33-year-old on the roster next season.
The holdup, of course, is Anthony's full no-trade clause that limits many options for the organization to make a move. Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported Tuesday the veteran wants to stay in New York to be near his son.
The 10-time All-Star is owed about $26 million next season, which is a lot for a non-competitive team to spend on one player. A trade that could kickstart the rebuilding process would make sense for the Knicks, but they will first need to convince Anthony.
