MLB All-Star Voting 2017: Standings, Predictions for Midsummer Classic Roster

Steve SilvermanJun 28, 2017

The race is on between Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees to see which player will accumulate the most votes for the All-Star Game July 11 in Miami.

With a little more than one full day to go before the end of voting, Harper (3,617,444) had a lead of more than 170,000 votes over Judge (3,442,597) when totals were released by Major League Baseball on Monday. Final results will be announced Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

There appears to be no question that Harper will lead all National League players, while the Yankee rookie outfielder has an edge over other American League players.

In the National League, Harper's teammates Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy lead at first base and second base, respectively. Zimmerman's lead over Anthony Rizzo of the Chicago Cubs is slightly more than 125,000 votes, while Murphy's lead over Javier Baez is a whopping 1.4 million votes.

Zack Cozart of the Cincinnati Reds has a surprising lead of more than 250,000 votes over Corey Seager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The closest NL race among infielders is at third base, where Kris Bryant of the Cubs has a lead of approximately 78,000 votes over Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies.

Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies seems a sure bet to join Harper in the National League outfield, while the final outfield spot is a five-way battle between Marcell Ozuna of the Miami Marlins, Jason Heyward of the Cubs, Ben Zobrist of the Cubs, Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins and Matt Kemp of the Atlanta Braves.

Ozuna has the lead over Heyward by approximately 29,000 votes, but any of those five could gain the start with a strong week at the ballot box.

Catcher Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants has a big lead at his position, with Willson Contreras of the Cubs in second place, more than 1.2 million votes down.

Salvador Perez has a strong lead in the American League catcher's race, as he is making a bid for his fifth consecutive spot on the All-Star team. Gary Sanchez of the Yankees is second to the Kansas City Royals' catcher, but he is more than 800,000 votes behind him.

Perez's teammate, Eric Hosmer, is in the lead for the first base starter's position, but he has a narrow advantage over Justin Smoak of the Toronto Blue Jays. Hosmer is an established performer and has been an excellent clutch hitter for the Royals, but Smoak is having the best year of his career with 20 home runs.

In the American League, second base appears to be the domain of Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros. Altuve leads Starlin Castro of the Yankees by nearly 1.2 million votes. Castro went on the disabled list Tuesday after suffering a strained right hamstring.

Carlos Correa, Altuve's teammate, is the leading vote-getter at the American League's loaded shortstop position. Correa has an edge of nearly 600,000 votes over Francisco Lindor of the Cleveland Indians, with Didi Gregorius of the Yankees and Xander Bogaerts of the Boston Red Sox in third and fourth place, respectively.

Slugging Miguel Sano of the Minnesota Twins has a lead over Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Indians by slightly more than 200,000 votes. Sano and Ramirez are likely to unseat Josh Donaldson of the Blue Jays at third base.

George Springer is having a sensational year for the Astros.

Injured Angels outfield Mike Trout (thumb ligament) is second to Judge among American League outfielders, while George Springer of the Astros is third and will almost certainly start next to Judge. It appears Cleveland outfielder Michael Brantley will be the other starter in the outfield since Trout will not be able to play.

The retirement of David Ortiz has opened up the designated hitter spot, and Nelson Cruz of the Seattle Mariners has the edge over hard-hitting Corey Dickerson of the Rays.
