Travelers Championship 2017: Jordan Spieth Holds Slim Lead After Round 3

Mike ChiariJun 24, 2017

Jordan Spieth maintained his spot atop the leaderboard at the Travelers Championship on Saturday, as a birdie on the 18th gave him a one-stroke lead over Boo Weekley.

Spieth shot a four-under 66 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, to move to 12-under for the tournament, which allowed him to finish the round with the lead for the third consecutive day.

Here is a look at the current leaderboard with one round left to play:

Although Spieth remains the golfer to beat, Weekley is his closest competitor after shooting a five-under 65 by virtue of five birdies over his final nine holes.

The 23-year-old Spieth came away with seven birdies on the day and started the birdie bonanza on the sixth hole with a perfect chip-in, as seen in this video courtesy of the PGA Tour's official Twitter account:

Spieth followed that with another birdie on No. 7 after spinning his approach within a couple of feet from the hole:

Although Spieth bogeyed No. 9, he quickly erased it with two birdies on the 10th and 11th holes to kick off his back nine.

Spieth gave away two strokes with bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14, however, which put his lead in jeopardy.

The two-time major champion was at his best down the stretch, though, with birdies on three of his final four holes.

On the 15th, Spieth narrowly missed his second chip-in of the day and had to settle for a birdie:

That was enough to get him back on track, and it showed on the par-three 16th when he put his tee shot close and rattled home another birdie putt:

Spieth and Weekley shared the lead when the former stepped on the 18th green, but he took back the solo lead with a perfect read on a tricky, breaking putt:

While that gives Spieth momentum entering Sunday's final round, Weekley is playing lights-out golf.

Weekley had an ordinary front nine with two birdies and two bogeys, but he was locked in down the stretch and put himself in contention.

The powerful veteran birdied three of his final four holes, including No. 18 thanks to a great approach shot and clutch putting:

Weekley has just three career PGA Tour wins, and he hasn't hoisted a trophy since 2013.

The 43-year-old has continued to grind, though, and fellow pro Chesson Hadley is happy to see him in the mix:

Spieth may also have to worry about Daniel Berger, as he is just three shots back at nine-under after a four-under 66 round.

Berger was especially strong at scrambling on Saturday, as seen on this bunker shot at No. 15 that almost found the cup:

Other hard-chargers include Paul Casey, David Lingmerth and C.T. Pan, who all sit at eight-under. Pan enjoyed the best round of the day with a six-under 64.

Charley Hoffman seemed as though he would be a threat after taking the lead with an eagle-birdie-birdie stretch from the 13th through the 15th.

As Justin Ray of GolfChannel.com pointed out, however, he fell apart over the final three holes:

Hoffman now sits six shots off the pace and will need a huge round and plenty of help Sunday to get back to the top.

Patrick Reed also faded with a two-over round that dropped him to five-under on the tournament, and Rory McIlroy failed to make noise, as his even-par 70 kept him at par overall.

The perception is that Spieth has had an off year, but if he can continue his current form Sunday, then he is in position to pick up his second win of 2017.
