Mets' Zack Wheeler Placed on 10-Day DL with Biceps Injury

Rob GoldbergJun 21, 2017

On Wednesday, the New York Mets announced they placed pitcher Zack Wheeler on the 10-day disabled list because of biceps tendinitis.

The move is retroactive to June 20, and right-hander Tyler Pill will replace him on the roster and likely in the rotation.

Wheeler has a 3-5 record and a 5.29 ERA in 13 starts this season.

The 27-year-old missed the last two campaigns after undergoing Tommy John surgery but finally returned for the start of 2017. He showed flashes of his strong play from before the injury, including a 2.48 ERA across six starts from May 9 to June 7.

Unfortunately, he has struggled mightily in his last two starts, allowing 15 earned runs in just 3.2 total innings. Despite the problems, he remained confident.

"I feel fine physically," Wheeler said Tuesday, per Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News. "My velo is there—[it's] just me not making pitches, and that's what I need to do."

One day later, he is on the disabled list.

This has been a common theme for the Mets, who have dealt with major injuries throughout the roster this season. The rotation has been hit especially hard, with Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey also on the DL. Syndergaard went to the disabled list shortly after refusing an MRI.

With another pitcher unavailable, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz and Robert Gsellman will have to shoulder the load.
