Joseph ZuckerJun 18, 2017

Brooks Koepka was Sunday's biggest winner after he earned the 2017 U.S. Open title at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin. The American's accountant was the day's second-biggest winner.

Koepka finished four shots ahead of Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harman.

By virtue of his victory, Koepka claimed $2 million of the tournament's $12 million total purse. The payouts for the top-10 finishers are below, courtesy of ESPN.com:

2017 U.S. Open Payouts

1. Brooks Koepka, -16 ($2,160,000)

T2. Hideki Matsuyama, -12 ($1,052,012)

T2. Brian Harman, -12 ($1,052,011.50)

4. Tommy Fleetwood, -11 ($563,642)

T5. Xander Schauffele, -10 ($420,334)

T5. Bill Haas, -10 ($420,334)

T5. Rickie Fowler, -10 ($420,334)

8. Charley Hoffman, -9 ($336,106)

T9. Trey Mullinax, -8 ($279,524)

T9. Brandt Snedeker, -8 ($279,524)

T9. Justin Thomas, -8 ($279,524)

Prior to Sunday, Koepka's only win on the PGA Tour came in 2015 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He had finished in the top 10 just four times in 14 major tournaments as well.

While the 27-year-old had yet to prove himself on one of golf's biggest stages, his caddie, Rickie Elliott, said it wasn't through a lack of confidence.

"With all his peers winning that were younger than him, 27's not that old, but he thinks he should be winning every week," Elliott said, per the New York Times' Karen Crouse. "The standard's so great out here. He believed he was as good as most of the lads, he just wasn't winning."

CBS Sports' Kyle Porter noted Koepka is part of an increasingly common trend:

Golf Digest's Mike O'Malley shared an anecdote detailing how far the U.S. Open champion has come:

While others, including Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas, made waves with their impressive single-round scores, consistency was the biggest key behind Koepka's win.

He finished under par on each of the four days and carded five bogeys for the entire tournament. As a whole, Koepka landed 87.5 percent of his drives on the fairway and reached 86.1 percent of the greens in regulation, per PGATour.com.

The question now becomes how Koepka can follow up from his U.S. Open win. The last two champions, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, went on to finish in the top 10 at The Open Championship the same year. The three champions before them, however, failed to place higher than 70th at the overseas event.

The 2017 U.S. Open could be the breakthrough Koepka needed. He entered the weekend 19th in the FedExCup standings and was a member of the United States' 2016 Ryder Cup team, winning three of his four matches.

Koepka was one of the better young golfers on the PGA Tour without a major title on his resume. That's no longer the case, and the experience he gained at Erin Hills should help him should he once again be in contention for a major championship.
