Spanish Youth Football Team Sack Coach After 25-0 Win

Christopher SimpsonJun 16, 2017

The coach of Serranos B's under-11 side in Spain has been sacked after his team beat Benicalap C 25-0, because the club believe "the margin of victory went against the spirit of the game."

Per El Pais' Javier Perez (h/t BBC Sport), Pablo Alcaide of Serranos B said: "We believe in encouraging respect for your opponents. After the result, we decided that the manager should leave."

The coach's lawyer Daniel Revenga defended his client's approach to the eight-a-side game. Rather than push his side to rack up a one-sided scoreline, he told them "to pressure only in their own half."

However, opponents Benicalap C "continued to attack and left spaces in behind," which fellow Valencian team Serranos capitalised on.

Football writer Michael Cox enjoyed Revenga's defence of the manager:

Benicalap are no strangers to heavy defeat—the game was their 30th and final match of the season, and they failed to a muster a single point, conceding 247 goals in the process, an average of more than eight per game.

The 25-0 defeat was still significantly above that, but Perez added that lopsided scorelines are not uncommon at that level in Spain.

However, many sides, upon reaching double figures, are said to "stop counting" the goals.
