Democrats Win Congressional Baseball Game After Steve Scalise Shooting
Congressional Democrats and Republicans put aside their political differences Thursday to play in the traditional Congressional Baseball Game a day after a horrific shooting left Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and others wounded.
According to the Associated Press (via Sports Illustrated), the Democrats won the game 11-2 in front of the event's biggest crowd since it began in 1909. Just less than 25,000 people attended Nationals Park to watch the annual ritual.
Unity after the shooting was the primary theme of the evening, as the AP noted a mention of Scalise from the announcer led to a standing ovation from those thousands of fans. What's more, Special Agent David Bailey, who was injured in the attack during the Republicans' practice in Virginia on Wednesday, threw out the first pitch to a warm welcome.
The Washington Nationals shared the moment:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted after the game, dedicating the showing to Scalise:
Texas Rep. Roger Williams was also injured Wednesday but still coached the Republican team during Thursday's contest.
The AP said many of those who played wore LSU hats to honor Scalise, who graduated from the university.
The Democrats' win moved their all-time record to 40-39-1 in the event, per Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated.
