Juventus Fan Injured in Turin Stampede During Champions League Final Dies
Juventus have confirmed a 38-year-old woman injured in a stampede in Turin during the UEFA Champions League final has died from her injuries, per Football Italia.
The victim was identified as Erika Pioletti and Juve released a statement offering condolences on the club's official website: "Juventus Football Club would like to express its sincere condolences for the death of Erika. The events that took place in Turin and the city’s victims of the tragedy on 3 June remain in the hearts and minds of all involved with the club."
Supporters of Juve were injured while watching a broadcast of the team's Champions League final against Real Madrid on June 3. Over 1,500 fans were involved in a stampede when some thought they heard explosions in Turin Square, according to Sam Jones of the Guardian.
Pioletti's injuries were deemed among the most serious, per Football Italia. She received treatment since, but her condition tragically deteriorated Thursday: "there were reports that Pioletti was braindead after her condition took a turn for the worse and this evening the hospital announced that she didn’t make it."
Another fan seriously injured in the incident, seven-year-old Kelvin, has been released but is still recovering from his injuries.
