Phil Mickelson Officially Withdraws from 2017 US Open Golf Tournament
Five-time major champion Phil Mickelson officially withdrew from the 2017 U.S. Open on Thursday morning, according to ESPN's Jason Sobel.
Mickelson had previously announced that he would withdraw to attend his daughter's high school graduation, but he waited to see if a potential weather delay would allow him to do so without pulling out of the tournament.
After initially announcing his decision, Lefty seemingly had no regrets about skipping the only major he has never won, per Will Gray of GolfChannel.com:
"I love the [U.S.] Open, but this is a special moment for us. I mean, my daughter's speaking, she's giving the speech there at graduation. It's just one of those things, you need to be there. So it wasn't a hard decision at all."
There was an outside opportunity that Mickelson could both attend the graduation and play in the U.S. Open, but he needed a four-hour delay at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin, in order to have his 3:20 p.m. ET tee time pushed back, according to ESPN.com.
With no precipitation in the forecast, however, he made the choice to step aside.
According to Sobel, this year's U.S. Open will mark the first time both Mickelson and Tiger Woods have been absent from the same major since 1994.
The 46-year-old Mickelson has built a Hall of Fame career, but with six second-place finishes to his credit, a U.S. Open title has proven elusive.
