Aaron Donald Reportedly Present at Rams Minicamp, Not on Contract Holdout

Joseph ZuckerJun 13, 2017

Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald arrived at team facilities Tuesday for the start of minicamp, NFL Network's Steve Wyche reported Tuesday.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted Donald's presence means he doesn't plan on holding out for a new contract.

Donald has two years remaining on his rookie contract. According to Over the Cap, he'll earn a little over $1.8 million guaranteed in 2017 and receive almost $6.9 million as part of his team option for 2018.

In terms of base salary, he ranks 30th among defensive tackles, per Spotrac.

The 26-year-old is one of the biggest bargains in the league. Despite playing on the interior of the defensive line, he has 28 sacks since the Rams selected him 13th overall in the 2014 draft. Pro Football Focus ranked him the best player heading into the 2017 season:

"With J.J. Watt injured in 2016, there has been no more consistently dominant force in the NFL over the past couple of seasons than Donald," PFF's Sam Monson wrote. "The Rams defensive lineman has been a one-man wrecking crew inside whether against the run or as a pass-rusher."

The MMQB's Albert Breer argued a holdout would be Donald's best move. Breer posited Donald's stock could slip slightly as he gets used to Wade Phillips' defensive scheme.

Donald arguably would've been in a good position to negotiate a new deal if he had chosen to hold out. After they finished 4-12 in their first season in Los Angeles, the Rams wouldn't want to go into their second year without their best player.

However, it appears Donald is content to put his contract on the back burner for the time being.
