US Open Field 2017: Predictions and Vegas Betting Odds for Notable Sleepers

Dustin Johnson finally got the major monkey off his back at the 2016 U.S. Open as he won the title at Oakmont Country Club by three shots after a string of near misses at golf's showpiece tournaments.

The 32-year-old American goes into the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills, Wisconsin, as the world No. 1 and bookies' favourite at 15-2.

Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy—U.S. Open champions in 2015 and 2011, respectively—are both priced at 12-1, while world No. 3 Jason Day is 14-1.

It would be little surprise should the winner of the 2017 U.S. Open come from that quartet of stars. The foursome have, after all, combined to claim six of the last 11 majors.

However, there is huge quality throughout the field at Erin Hills, and there are a number of under-the-radar picks who could go all the way.

South African Branden Grace is a 40-1 shot who has fine form at the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship.

Indeed, while his Masters and Open Championship results do not make for the best reading, at the U.S. Open he finished tied for fifth last year and joint-fourth in 2015. He has also finished in the top five in the last two years at the PGA Championship.

That is a fine record, and he has the all-round game to be competitive around the lengthy Erin Hills, and he should register another top-10 finish.

Another notable sleeper is Grace's compatriot, Louis Oosthuizen, priced at an attractive 50-1.

Erin Hills is going to be tough, and players with the right temperament and consistency are likely to flourish.

Oosthuizen is a cool customer, unlikely to get flustered should events conspire against him, and he has form in past majors.

The crowning achievement of his career so far was his Open Championship triumph at St. Andrews in 2010, but he has come close to adding another major since, returning three second places, including at the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

Finally, 33-year-old Kevin Kisner could be worth backing having finished sixth in his most recent outing at the Memorial Tournament following victory in the Dean & Deluca Invitational at Colonial Country Club in late May.

Currently ranked No. 20 in the world, Kisner is priced at 66-1, long odds for a player who has been racking up the top-10 finishes this year, per the PGA Tour:

He has hardly dazzled while playing at the past three U.S. Opens—his best result was a tie for 12th in 2015—but statistically speaking he looks a fine candidate to be lifting the trophy come Sunday, per Dave Tindall on Betfair.

Prediction: Grace, Oosthuizen to finish in the top 10, Kisner in the top 20.
