College Baseball Super Regionals 2017: CSU Fullerton Win Tops Sunday's Play

Tyler ConwayJun 11, 2017

Five college baseball teams had a chance to pave their Road to Omaha on Sunday with Super Regional action taking place across the nation.

Unfortunately, weather reared its ugly head at the worse possible time.

Games between Florida State and Sam Houston State and Florida and Wake Forest each went under lengthy delays for rain. FSU-Sam Houston did not begin until 7:30 p.m. ET after a scheduled early-afternoon start, while Florida-Wake Forest saw its game suspended in the middle of an eventful fifth inning (will resume Monday).

With that in mind, let's take a look at how everything wound up shaking out and which teams made their way to the College World Series tournament.

Super Regional Sunday Results

Cal State Fullerton 2, Long Beach 1

TCU 8, Missouri State 1

Florida State 19, Sam Houston State 0

LSU vs. Mississippi State—Ongoing

Florida vs. Wake Forest—Suspended (Will resume at 1 p.m. ET Monday)

Cal State Fullerton 2, Long Beach State 1

Hank LoForte hit a two-run single and Colton Eastman pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, as Cal State Fullerton earned a nail-biter of a 2-1 victory over Long Beach State to reach Omaha.

LoForte's single was one of just two hits on the afternoon for Fullerton, which scraped by in an all-out pitchers duel at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. John Sheaks hit two batters to start the fourth inning, who were then sacrificed into scoring position for LoForte to drive them in.

Fullerton pitchers allowed just one run over the final 18 innings of the series, bringing themselves back from the brink of elimination to a tournament berth.

Eastman was every bit of the ace the Titans needed him to be Sunday, bordering on unhittable at points when he was locating correctly. The sophomore righty struck out eight and walked four in his seven innings, with Long Beach's only run coming thanks to a passed ball in the sixth.

Brett Conine came in and threw the final two innings to get the save, though it was far from his best effort. The Fullerton closer allowed three hits and had runners on in scoring position during the eighth and ninth. It was his 15th save of the season.

TCU 8, Missouri State 1

TCU became the latest team to earn its spot in the College World Series after a two-game sweep over Missouri State.

Brian Howard was dominant on the mound to lead the Horned Frogs, allowing just one run in 7.1 innings while striking out 11 at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was already feeling the victory after this key strikeout to end the seventh:

Meanwhile, the TCU lineup ensured his big start wasn't wasted. Elliott Barzilli was the star of the day with four RBI on a 3-for-4 performance, while Cam Warner and Zach Humphreys also added three hits each. Evan Skoug, who had the big home run in Game 1, came through again with another home run and three RBI.

The team outhit Missouri State 14-4 to earn what became a one-sided victory.

Sean Wymer was then able to close things out with four strikeouts in 1.2 perfect innings to send TCU to Omaha.

Florida State 19, Sam Houston State 0

Sam Houston State was likely begging for a mercy rule in what became one of the biggest blowouts of the entire baseball season.

Florida State's offense exploded for 19 runs Sunday night behind the play of Taylor Walls. The team's catalyst was at his best from the leadoff spot, getting on base seven times while scoring in each of the first five innings.

He ended the night 3-for-3 with two home runs, four RBI and four walks.

Quincy Nieporte also had a big day, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to help continue the rout.

Although the win was expected by the time it was 8-0 after two innings, the celebration wasn't any less enjoyable:

Drew Parrish, Cole Sands and Andrew Karp collaborated on the shutout, not only securing the win but also sending a message to the rest of the field that the Seminoles are a real threat to win a title.
