Recaps

Florida State 7, Sam Houston State 6

Florida State overcame an early four-run deficit to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.

With runners on first and second, Jackson Lueck hit a shot to the gap to bring home Taylor Walls. Leuck finished 4-for-5 with four RBI in an outstanding individual effort.

Sam Houston State didn't trail the Seminoles until the final play. The squad was rolling in the early going, with this third-inning triple play being a highlight:

The Bearkats built their lead with four runs in the first two innings, all of them unearned after errors extended each frame. Florida State pitcher Tyler Holton allowed six runs in six innings, although only two of them were earned.

Regardless of fault, the Seminoles had to figure out how to overcome a 4-0 deficit.

They chipped away throughout the game, and then down 6-3, they scored three in the bottom of the seventh to even the score at 6-6.

Lueck did the rest to give Florida State the victory. These teams will play Game 2 on Sunday at noon ET with Sam Houston State trying to avoid elimination.

Louisville 6, Kentucky 2

Drew Ellis hit two more home runs to lead Louisville to a Game 2 and series win over Kentucky at Jim Patterson Stadium on Saturday.

Ellis also had a big three-run shot in Game 1, and now the team is headed to Omaha, Nebraska, for the CWS after a 3-for-4 effort from the first baseman.

Brendan McKay also came up big, showing once again what makes him such a highly regarded prospect against the in-state rival.

Although he didn't do much at the plate, his pitching shone Saturday with nine strikeouts and no walks in 6.2 innings. He allowed just two runs in the winning effort, becoming the program's all-time strikeout leader in the process.

Rick Bozich of WDRB described McKay's ability to come through in big moments:

He allowed a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-2, but Sam Bordner got a key strikeout with the bases loaded to end the threat.

After two more insurance runs by the Cardinals, they were able to close out the 6-2 victory.

Cal State Fullerton 12, Long Beach State 0

John Gavin pitched a complete-game shutout at Blair Field to help Cal State Fullerton force a Game 3 in the super regionals.

With Chris Hudgins keying an offensive explosion as well, Long Beach State simply had no chance to keep up after winning Game 1.

It was a bad omen for the Dirtbags when the first two pitches from starter Dave Smith hit opposing batters. CS Fullerton ended up with two runs in the first inning to get the early advantage.

However, it was the third inning that really broke the game open. The Titans scored seven runs, simply moving through the batting order with six singles, two doubles and a walk. Smith was responsible for all nine runs through three innings, eight of them earned.

The 9-0 score was more than enough for Gavin, who was at his best with nine shutout innings for CS Fullerton. The starter scattered seven hits while striking out five in the win.

The Titans continued to pile it on, with Hudgins finishing 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Timmy Richards also helped with three runs on a 3-for-4 day.

The teams will now battle in a winner-take-all Game 3 Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.

TCU 3, Missouri State 2

TCU kicked off its super regional with a hard-fought one-run win over Missouri State.

Evan Skoug came through with the big hit for TCU in the eighth inning. Down 2-1, the catcher drilled a two-run home run to right to give the home team a 3-2 lead:

Durbin Feltman then closed out the save to help the Horned Frogs to a win.

The majority of the game featured an outstanding pitching duel between Dylan Coleman and Jared Janczak. Janczak struck out 10 with just one walk, allowing two runs in 6.1 innings. Coleman gave up two runs in 7.1 innings, striking out 10 while throwing 132 pitches.

Hunter Steinmetz squeeze bunt gave Missouri State the 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, which seemed like it would be enough to win based on Coleman's pitching. Unfortunately, he was taken out in the eighth inning after walking his fifth batter.

One hitter later, Skoug transformed the contest with a two-run shot against Jordan Knutson.

The Bears challenged in the top of the ninth but a game-ending double play secured the victory.

Missouri State will now try to keep its season alive in Game 2 Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.

Texas A&M 12, Davidson 6

Texas A&M punched its ticket to the College World Series after a come-from-behind victory over Davidson.

The Wildcats saw their magical postseason come to an end in a game that was much different than the final score would indicate.

After going down 2-0, Davidson scored the next six runs of the game, knocking Aggies starter Corbin Martin out after allowing five runs in 4.2 innings. A solo home run by Brett Centracchio helped extend the lead to 6-2.

Unfortunately, this is where things started to fall apart. Texas A&M scored seven runs in the eighth inning to take over the lead.

It seemed like the Wildcats had a chance to leave the inning with a lead, but a dropped pop-up with two outs left the door open for four more runs to come home. There was controversy over whether it was a catch, but Aaron Fitt of D1 Baseball described the situation:

Andrew Joseph of USA Today summed it up succinctly:

Three more insurance runs in the ninth inning helped Texas A&M clinched what became a blowout win.

The Aggies will now compete with Louisville and two more teams in the next stage of the NCAA tournament.

Florida 2, Wake Forest 1

Ryan Larson hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to hand the Florida Gators a 1-0 series lead over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

The squads each had to overcome an extended rain delay that kept them off the field for hours.

Alex Faedo was the man for Florida before the break, striking out nine in four scoreless innings. While he likely could have gone longer, Bryan Singer took over when play resumed and was just as impressive, ending his night with four shutout innings and eight strikeouts with no walks.

Parker Dunshee wasn't affected on the mound for Wake Forest, pitching on both sides of the delay while allowing just one run and three hits in eight innings.

The runs were clearly tough to come by for both sides, but the Demon Deacons were able tie the score at 1-1 thanks to a Ben Breazeale homer in the top of the ninth.

Game 2 in this super regional will take place Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. While Florida has the early advantage, anything can happen with these two talented squads.

Oregon State 9, Vanderbilt 2

The Oregon State Beavers punched their ticket to the College World Series with a commanding 9-2 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday night.

Bryce Fehmel was stellar on the mound for the Beavers, needing just 104 pitches to shut down the Commodores as he twirled a complete-game five-hit gem. All told, Fehmel recorded 10 strikeouts and no walks in the win.

Beavers first baseman KJ Harrison dealt Vanderbilt a major blow in the top of the third inning when he slammed a three-run home run to give Oregon State a 4-0 lead.

That was all the breathing room the Beavers needed. Harrison finished with four RBI, while designated hitter Trevor Larnach tacked on two of his own with a single in the seventh.

LSU 4, Mississippi State 3

Through seven innings Saturday night, the LSU Tigers couldn't generate any offense. As a result, they entered the bottom of the eighth down 3-0 looking like they'd face elimination Sunday.

But in the blink of an eye, the Tigers offense came alive.

Greg Deichmann got the party started with a two-run double down the left field line, and Zach Watson tied things up at three one batter later by smoking a single to left.

Three batters later, catcher Michael Papierski popped a deep sacrifice fly to center that allowed LSU to secure a 4-3 lead.

At that point, the Tigers' confidence was surging. And while Mississippi State threatened with a runner on third with two outs in the top of the ninth, reliever Zack Hess held steady and struck out Hunter Stovall to cap the win.

LSU leads the Bulldogs 1-0 with Game 2 scheduled for 9 p.m. ET Sunday.
