Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Andrea Belotti, Alvaro Morata

James DudkoJun 10, 2017

Manchester United reportedly want to sign strikers Andrea Belotti and Alvaro Morata before the end of June. The Red Devils have agreed terms with Real Madrid's Morata and offered £70 million for Torino star Belotti.

Details of both pursuits come from Miguel Delaney of The Independent. In relation to Belotti, Delaney said: "United have...made a bid of £70 million for Belotti, despite Torino also having insisted on a figure that matches the 23-year-old's buy-out clause of £84 million. The Old Trafford hierarchy, however, have an idea of what they think the Serie A club will accept."

Talk of Belotti's move to Old Trafford has been building in recent days. United boss Jose Mourinho recently sent his agent, Jorge Mendes, to speak with Torino chairman Urbano Cairo, per Italian publication Tuttosport (h/t Bruce Archer of the Daily Express).

However, Archer pointed out Cairo may still expect United to meet Belotti's release clause, which he reported is £88 million. It's a hefty price tag despite Belotti's excellence in Serie A last season.

The 23-year-old scored 28 times in all competitions, per WhoScored.com. Belotti is a rising star, but he still represents a risk at this price.

Perhaps that is why Mourinho remains keen to also sign former protege Morata, whom he brought into the first team at Real Madrid in 2010.

Delaney spelled out the state of the Red Devils' attempts to sign the Spain international: "United in the end agreed personal terms with Morata 'very quickly' and are now hopeful that they can secure the signing of the player for a fee of around £60 million."

The hope of signing Morata for a relatively reduced fee could be boosted by Real's pursuit of AS Monaco's Kylian Mbappe, as well as Morata's desire to work with Mourinho again, according to Delaney.

It makes sense for Mourinho to want Morata to help lead the line next season. The 24-year-old proved prolific despite a reduced role with Los Blancos during the 2016/17 campaign, per Squawka Football:

WhoScored.com summed up how efficient Morata was with the chances he had:

Mourinho's need for new options up front is obvious after United opted against giving Zlatan Ibrahimovic a new contract, per BBC Sport. There are also lingering doubts about the long-term futures of Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial, detailed by the Daily Telegraph and Manchester Evening News, respectively.

These issues mean United must restock their forward line this summer. If Belotti arrives, Mourinho will get a classy and ruthless finisher, one who could have turned a few of the 15 draws United recorded in the Premier League last season into wins.

As for Morata, he's an intriguing mix of technical acumen, physical power and versatility. He can lead the line or act as a supporting striker.

Signing either player would give United a young star with the potential to get better who would act as the focal point of a new-look attack.
