Oklahoma Beats Florida, Becomes Lowest Seed to Win College Softball World Series

Rob GoldbergJun 6, 2017

Oklahoma is once again on top of the softball world, winning its second straight women's college World Series title and third in the last five years.

The Sooners followed up their 17-inning Game 1 victory with a 5-4 win over Florida in Game 2 at OGE Energy Field in Oklahoma City Tuesday, clinching the best-of-three final and completing a five-game sweep through the WCWS.

With the victory over the No. 1 team in the country, the No. 10 seed also became the lowest-seeded team ever to win a softball title.

Last night's hero Shay Knighten came through again with a three-run double, giving Oklahoma a lead in the second inning. She was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Paige Lowary was able to close out the win with two shutout innings out of the bullpen.

The team's Twitter account and ESPNU showed the postgame celebration:

Lauren Shute of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution provided her thoughts after the game:

After Monday's marathon game, the pitchers seemed exhausted early in Tuesday's action. Six pitchers were used between the two teams, with the bulk of the runs coming in the early going.

Nicole Mendes kicked off the scoring for Oklahoma with this leadoff home run:

But this was only the start of the high-scoring action. Florida scored three runs in the second, followed by four Oklahoma runs in the bottom of the inning.

Knighten came through with the biggest hit in this stretch, driving in three runs with a bases-clearing double:

Starters Paige Parker and Aleshia Ocasio were both taken out in the second inning. Parker finished with three runs allowed in 1.2 innings after pitching 6.2 innings the night before for Oklahoma. Ocasio ended her night with 1.1 innings pitched and four runs allowed.

Although a Chelsea Herndon home run for Florida cut the deficit to 5-4, the scoring did seem to slow down from there.

Oklahoma's bullpen stepped up, with Mariah Lopez, Mendes and Lowary combining for one run and two hits in 5.1 innings.

Lowary was especially impressive closing things out with three strikeouts and zero hits allowed, coming up big with this strikeout in the sixth:

Delanie Gourley did as much as she could to keep the Gators competitive with 4.2 innings of one-run ball, but there wasn't enough offense to keep up on the scoreboard.

Although Florida was the best team during the regular season, Oklahoma once again stepped up in the NCAA tournament with 11 straight victories after an opening loss to North Dakota State.

Considering the underclassmen talent for both sides and the fact these two teams are responsible for each of the last five WCWS titles, fans should expect each squad to return as a top contender in 2018.
