Memorial Tournament 2017: Jason Dufner Bounces Back on Sunday to Earn Win

Rob GoldbergJun 4, 2017

Jason Dufner pulled away from a crowded leaderboard to win the 2017 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Dufner had a strange week that began with back-to-back rounds of 65 before falling apart with a 77 Saturday. However, he bounced back with a 68 Sunday to secure the three-stroke win.

Per Justin Ray of Golf Channel, he became the first player to shoot 77 or worse in the third round and win a tournament since 1989.

While some golfers were affected by rain that led to two separate delays, the 40-year-old was at his best down the stretch to finish on top.

This par save on No. 18 after the rain delay helped him seal the win:

Here are the final results from Dublin, Ohio:

1. Jason Dufner (-13)

T2. Anirban Lahiri (-10)

T2. Rickie Fowler (-10)

T4. Justin Thomas (-9)

T4. Matt Kuchar (-9)

T6. Kyle Stanley (-8)

T6. James Hahn (-8)

T6. Kevin Kisner (-8)

T6. Bubba Watson (-8)

T10. Daniel Summerhays (-7)

T10. Graham DeLaet (-7)

T10. Jamie Lovemark (-7)

Daniel Summerhays led the field by three strokes entering the day as the only player with three rounds in the 60s. Unfortunately, a double bogey on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 4 opened things up for the rest of the field.

Although he steadied himself a bit, a 41 on the back nine dropped him to a disappointing tie for 10th for the tournament.

Bubba Watson was the next contender thanks to three birdies in his first six holes, including No. 6:

Rickie Fowler eventually took over the lead before the rain delay, using bogey-free golf on his first 13 holes to sit at 12-under for the tournament.

Shortly after a delay that lasted more than an hour, however, it was nearly anyone's tournament to win with six players battling within one stroke of the lead on the back nine.

It was Dufner who finally emerged from the pack with a birdie on No. 15, one of seven holes under par.

His irons continued to be his strength on the final few holes, even with continued rain. A near-perfect first two shots on No. 17 set up another birdie, giving him a two-stroke lead with one hole remaining.

A second delay created concern whether the players would be able to finish before darkness set in, but there was enough time to conclude the event with Dufner raising the title.

Shane Bacon of Fox Sports described the effort:

Fowler was two-over after the first rain delay to end with a final-round score of 70, putting him in a tie for second.

Although he never moved into the lead, Anirban Lahiri had the best round of the day to finish with a 65. The Indian player improved his score in each round and it helped him earn a tie for second.

Still, Dufner was the best overall in the week to leave with his first tournament win in 2017.

The FedEx St. Jude Classic is next up on tour, featuring several notable golfers trying to get one last tune-up before the U.S. Open at Erin Hills, Wisconsin, in two weeks.

After some low scores in the past week, things are about to get significantly tougher in the coming rounds.
