Saturday's Results

Vanderbilt 9, Clemson 4

Vanderbilt's offensive onslaught was too much for Clemson to overcome, as Vanderbilt pushed across three runs in the top of the fifth and four runs in the seventh en route to a 9-4 win over the Tigers.

Will Toffey (three hits, two RBI), Jeren Kendall (three hits, three RBI) and Jason Delay (two hits, two RBI) led the way for Vanderbilt's offense, while the potential No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming MLB draft, Kyle Wright, gave up seven hits and walked one while striking out nine batters over seven innings, giving up just three runs.

Clemson's Seth Beer hit a home run while Andrew Cox added two RBI to lead the Tigers' offense. Five Clemson pitchers combined to give up 16 hits and nine runs in the loss.

Texas Tech 6, Sam Houston State 0

Tanner Gardner's two home runs and a combined shutout from pitchers Steven Gingery, Jose Quezada and Dylan Dusek led Texas Tech to a 6-0 victory over Sam Houston State on Sunday.

Gardner wasted little time making an impact on the game, blasting a two-run homer in the top of the first. He'd add his second two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth, while Ryan Long would also homer for the Red Raiders and Michael Berglund added an RBI double.

Gingery earned the win, allowing just two hits and two walks through six innings while striking out eight. Sam Houston State's Heath Donica took the loss, giving up four earned runs.

Texas A&M 3, Iowa 2

Cole Bedford blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth and Corbin Martin pitched seven strong innings to lead Texas A&M past Iowa on Saturday, 3-2.

Martin gave up just two runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out nine, and Cason Sherrod and Kaylor Chafin combined to throw two scoreless innings to close out the win. Bedford, meanwhile, bailed out an offense that failed to get much going.

An RBI single by Mitchell Boe in the second and a solo home run from Jake Adams in the fifth was all the Hawkeyes could muster against Martin on Saturday evening.

Wake Forest 4, West Virginia 3

Gavin Sheets' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Wake Forest a 4-3 win over West Virginia on Saturday night.

Parker Dunshee and Griffin Roberts combined to give up just seven hits and three runs, striking out nine, though all three of the runs came in the first inning, highlighted by Jackson Cramer's two-run homer. Dunshee would settle down from there, however, throwing six scoreless innings before handing off to Roberts, who orchestrated two scoreless innings of his own to close down the win.

Bruce Steel's two-run home in the bottom of the fifth and Jonathan Pryor's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh evened the score for the Demon Deacons before Sheets provided his heroics in the bottom of the ninth.

Florida 5, South Florida 1

The Florida Gators scored four runs in the top of the 12th inning to secure a 5-1 victory over the South Florida Bulls.

Both teams traded single runs midway through the game. Florida got on the board in the fourth inning when Mike Rivera's RBI single scored JJ Schwarz.

South Florida responded in the bottom of the fifth on Duke Stunkel's RBI single. The score would stay tied at one until Florida broke through against Bulls relievers Andrew Perez and Mark Savarese.

Alex Faedo and Michael Byrne were brilliant on the mound for Florida. The duo combined to allow just seven hits and struck out 18 South Florida hitters in the win.

Louisville 11, Oklahoma 1

The Louisville Cardinals asserted their dominance over the Oklahoma Sooners in an 11-1 win on Saturday night.

After Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, Louisville scored the next 11 runs of the game. The Cardinals came to life in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 deadlock with seven runs thanks to four hits, four walks and a hit by pitch.

Louisville only had eight hits in the game, yet managed to score 11 runs. Oklahoma pitchers walked a total of seven batters, with reliever Braidyn Fink not recording an out and giving up two earned runs after walking the only two batters he faced.

Logan Taylor and Colby Fitch, the top two hitters in Louisville's lineup, drove in five runs and scored three runs.

Indiana 11, Ohio 2

The Indiana Hoosiers sent the Ohio Bobcats packing Saturday with a dominant 11-2 win at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.

Ohio seized a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Indiana scored 11 unanswered runs, including three in the fourth, and a four-run outburst in the eighth.

Outfielder Logan Sowers went 4-for-5 with three home runs and five RBI in the Hoosiers' triumph.

Jonathan Stiever hurled a complete game for Indiana, allowing just seven hits and two runs, while striking out four.

Indiana will remain in the tournament and play the loser of Kentucky vs. NC State on Sunday in another elimination game.

Florida State 6, UCF 1

Florida State avoided an early exit Saturday by beating UCF 6-1 on its home field at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.

Despite being the top seed in the region, the Seminoles were in danger of getting eliminated, but instead they took out the Knights.

The Seminoles' power was on display Saturday, as both Taylor Walls and Jackson Lueck homered in the game.

Pitcher Tyler Holton was the unquestioned MVP, however, firing a complete game with 13 strikeouts. Holton allowed just six hits and one run, but it was unearned due to an error.

The loser of Auburn against Tennessee Tech is next for FSU.

Xavier 3, Radford 1

Xavier dominated on the mound Saturday to defeat Cinderella team Radford 3-1 and stay alive in the tournament.

The Musketeers allowed just two hits in the game, with Garrett Schilling throwing seven strong innings and giving up just one run.

Xavier had only five hits in its own right, but it managed to manufacture one run in the second, fourth and fifth innings, which was enough to prevail behind Schilling's showing.

The Musketeers await the loser of the clash between the top two seeds in the region; Louisville and Oklahoma.

UNC-Greensboro 3, St. John's 1

Underdog UNC-Greensboro extended its stay in Clemson, South Carolina, on Saturday by virtue of a 3-1 win over St. John's.

The game was a pitchers' duel, with just 11 hits between the teams, but the Spartans set the tone with a run in each of the first two innings and never relinquished the lead.

Matt Frisbee threw six shutout innings for UNC-Greensboro before Andrew Wantz came on and gave up just one run in three innings of relief.

St. John's starter Kevin Magee was excellent in his own right with five hits and two runs allowed in seven innings, but the Red Storm offense didn't support him.

UNC-Greensboro will have a chance to keep its magical run going when it faces the loser of host Clemson against Vanderbilt.

Bethune-Cookman 4, Marist 2

On the strength of a complete game from starter Tyler Norris, Bethune-Cookman knocked Marist out of the tournament, 4-2, on Saturday.

Norris surrendered just six hits, two walks and two runs in nine innings while racking up seven strikeouts.

The Wildcats also got a home run from third baseman Jameel Edney, as well as two RBI from shortstop Nate Sterijevski.

Shortstop Randy Taveras homered for Marist in the eighth inning, but it was unable to overcome the remaining two-run deficit.

Bethune-Cookman will play the loser of Florida against South Florida, and it figures to be a heavy underdog regardless of the result.

North Carolina 8, Michigan 1

The North Carolina Tar Heels roughed up the Michigan Wolverines 8-1 on Saturday to avoid elimination at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

UNC was trailing 1-0 entering the fifth inning, but it scored three runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to dash Michigan's hopes and eliminate it from the tournament.

Five different players drove in runs for the Tar Heels, and starting pitcher Luca Dalatri kept them in the game until the bats got going.

Dalatri allowed just one run in seven innings along with five hits two walks and six strikeouts.

The lone run Dalatri surrendered was a solo home run by Michigan third baseman Drew Lugbauer in the second inning.

Michigan couldn't muster any additional offense, allowing UNC to stay alive and prepare for a meeting with the loser of the game pitting Florida Gulf Coast against Davidson.

Maryland 16, UMBC 2

Maryland's offense came to life in a big way Saturday, as it destroyed UMBC 16-2 behind four home runs.

Shortstop Kevin Smith homered twice for the Terrapins to go along with six RBI, while outfielder Marty Costes and catcher Justin Morris also went deep.

The Retrievers led 1-0 through two innings after a home run by designated hitter Zack Bright, but Maryland began its onslaught in the third inning.

From the third inning through the eighth inning, the Terrapins scored two or more runs in all but one frame, including six in fourth.

Somewhat lost in the hit parade was starter Taylor Bloom's effort, as he allowed seven hits and two runs in eight innings.

Maryland will face the loser of Wake Forest versus West Virginia.

Stanford 9, BYU 1

In danger of being ousted from the tournament on its own diamond, Stanford rose to the occasion to defeat BYU 9-1 in an elimination game Saturday.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by designated hitter Colton Shaver in the fifth inning, but the Cardinal struck back quickly and scored three runs in each of the next three innings.

Left fielder Quinn Brodey, designated hitter Daniel Bakst and center fielder Jack Klein all homered for Stanford.

Also, Stanford starter Chris Castellanos threw a complete game, allowing just four hits, while walking none and striking out three.

Saturday will be a busy day for the Cardinal and there is little time to celebrate, as they must take on CSU Fullerton in what amounts to a double header for Stanford.

Holy Cross 7, Nebraska 4

Despite having a record this season of just 23-28, Holy Cross surprisingly defeated second-seeded Nebraska 7-4 on Saturday to eliminate the Cornhuskers.

Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead in the first, but Nebraska managed to tie things up in the fourth.

That didn't last long, however, as the Crusaders plated three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to put the Huskers in a deep hole.

Nebraska started to dig out of it in the eighth with two runs, including a home run by designated hitter Scott Schreiber.

The Cornhuskers couldn't muster any offense in the ninth, though, allowing Holy Cross to pull off the upset win and set up a game against the loser of Oregon State versus Yale.

Oral Roberts 14, Oklahoma State 6

On the power of a magnificent performance from left fielder Michael Hungate, Oral Roberts remained in the running and eliminated better-seeded Oklahoma State with a 14-6 win Saturday.

Hungate was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with one home run and five RBI, and four other Golden Eagles added multi-hit days as well.

Oral Roberts tagged OK State starter Joe Lienhard for four runs in two innings and hung another six on Tyler Buffett in relief.

The Golden Eagles scored 10 runs between and second and fourth innings, and while the Cowboys scored four in the fifth, Oral Roberts put the game away in the sixth with four more runs.

After picking up the win, Oral Roberts will face whichever team loses the No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup of Arkansas against Missouri State.

Davidson 2, Florida Gulf Coast 1

Davidson became the first team to earn a place in the regional final Saturday, as the No. 4 seed upset No. 2 Florida Gulf Coast 2-1 in a tight and dramatic contest.

The Wildcats entered the ninth inning with a 2-0 lead, as starting pitcher Evan Roberts had thrown eight shutout innings.

Roberts was allowed to start the ninth, but he gave up a solo home run to first baseman Nick Rivera, which cut the Eagles' deficit in half.

Westin Whitmire relieved Roberts and struck out two batters en route to earning the save and allowing Davidson to move on.

Spoiled in the loss for Florida Gulf Coast was a great pitching performance by Josh Dye, who scattered nine hits and walked one, while allowing two runs in a complete game.

Despite the loss, the Eagles are still alive, and they will take on top-seeded North Carolina in an elimination game Sunday.

Rice 13, Texas Southern 6

Rice overpowered an overmatched Texas Southern squad Saturday in NCAA baseball tournament regional play and smashed its way to a 13-6 victory.

Texas Southern surprisingly led 5-0 after an inning and a half, but the Owls countered with five in the bottom of the second and then scored six in the seventh to cruise to a win and eliminate the Tigers.

Rice clobbered 17 hits in the game, including two home runs by second baseman Tristan Gray, one by center fielder Ryan Chandler and one by designated hitter Andrew Dunlap.

Every starter had at least one hit and one run for the Owls, and Gray led the way with three hits and five RBI.

After starting pitcher Zach Esquivel was knocked out of the game through 1.1 innings, three Rice reliever combined to allow no earned runs in 7.2 innings of work.

By virtue of the win, Rice will face the team that loses between LSU and SE Louisiana to remain in the tournament.

Houston 17, Baylor 3

In a game that experienced a lengthy rain delay, top-seeded Houston obliterated No. 2 Baylor 17-3 and eliminated the Bears from the tournament.

The Cougars rebounded nicely from a surprising loss to Iowa on Friday and rapped 20 hits to ensure it will have a chance in another elimination game Sunday.

Houston led 3-0 through five, but it truly took control of the game in sixth when it scored five runs and followed that up with eight runs in the seventh.

Baylor used seven pitchers in the game, and six of them surrendered at least one run to the hot-hitting Cougars.

The home run ball was working for Houston, as third baseman Jake Scheiner, center fielder Corey Julks and designated hitter Joe Davis each went deep once.

Houston will face either Iowa or Texas A&M on Sunday with a spot in the regional final on the line.

San Diego State 3, UCLA 2

In a grueling game that lasted 13 innings, San Diego State outlasted UCLA 3-2 and avoided elimination in Long Beach, California.

The Aztecs led 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, but the Bruins managed to tie it on an RBI single by third baseman Jack Stronach.

The game was a stalemate for four innings, but San Diego State broke through in the 13th on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch with shortstop Danny Sheehan at the plate.

UCLA was unable to strike back in the bottom of the frame against CJ Saylor, who threw 4.2 innings of scoreless ball for the Aztecs in relief.

San Diego State is in for a tough game Sunday, as it will face off with the loser of the contest between Long Beach State and Texas.

Arizona 6, Delaware 5

Despite coming back from a four-run deficit, Delaware fell 6-5 to Arizona in 12 innings Saturday and was eliminated from the NCAA baseball tournament.

The Wildcats got a go-ahead home run from designated hitter Alfonso Rivas in the top of the 12th, and pitcher Juan Aguilera held Delaware scoreless in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.

With the game tied 1-1 entering the seventh, Arizona exploded for four runs to take the lead.

The Blue Hens chipped away with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to force extra innings, however.

Although Delaware had momentum on its side after a two-run single from left fielder Jordan Glover in the ninth to tie it, the offense went stagnant after that.

Arizona's dramatic win ensured that it will play for a spot in the regional final Sunday against either Texas Tech or Sam Houston State.

Auburn 5, Tennessee Tech 3

Auburn advanced to the regional final Saturday, as the No. 3 seed defeated the upstart No. 4 seed Tennessee Tech 5-3.

The Tigers trailed the Golden Eagles 2-1 in the fourth inning, but Auburn managed to score three runs in the bottom of the frame, which included a two-run single by second baseman Luke Jarvis.

Tennessee Tech got to within one with a run in the seventh, but Auburn got the run back in the eighth and closed it out.

Casey Mize was excellent in a complete game effort for Auburn, as he allowed seven hits, one walk and three runs while striking out 12.

Although the Golden Eagles got home runs from designated hitter Ryan Flick and first baseman Chase Chambers, they couldn't put together a big inning against Mize.

The victory assures Auburn a chance to play its way into super regionals, while Tennessee Tech will have an elimination game Sunday against top-seeded Florida State.
