Nordea Masters 2017: Chris Wood Leads Tight Race After Saturday Action

Gianni VerschuerenJun 3, 2017

Chris Wood will enter the final day of the 2017 Nordea Masters with a one-shot lead over Benjamin Hebert and Renato Paratore, as this year's tournament is set to go down to the wire.

Wood played a round of five-under 68 on Saturday to move to nine-under for the tournament, but the gaps at the top of the leaderboard are tight. The group tied for eighth place is just four shots behind the leader.

Here's a look at the leaderboard:

Recap

Wood enjoyed a spectacular run on the back-nine, bagging three birdies in the first four holes to power his way to the top of the leaderboard, per the European Tour's official Twitter account:

He and Thorbjorn Olesen fed off each other's energy, pushing the pace toward the end of the round. Every time one of them landed an excellent putt, the other was right there to answer.

Per the European Tour, the pairing started to look like matchplay at one point:

But while the Englishman played mistake-free until the 18th, Olesen dropped a shot on the 14th and completely messed up the final hole. A double-bogey dropped him out of second place, but he's still just two shots behind Wood.

The final day of the Nordea Masters should be a close one. Hebert finished the day three-under thanks to a mistake-free back-nine, putting himself in a prime position to contend for the title.

Paratore did the same, finishing two-under for a share of second place.

Overnight leader Jamie Donaldson couldn't hold his nerve, however, as he made one mistake after the other to finish with a score of two-over. He was able to limit the damage toward the end of the back-nine, and with just three shots to make up on Sunday, he could still win his first European Tour title since 2014.
