Benjamin Mendy Reportedly to Complete Manchester City Transfer After France Duty

AS Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy will reportedly complete a £39.8 million transfer to Manchester City when he returns from international duty with France. 

The Sun's Daniel Cutts reported Mendy will follow former Monaco team-mate Bernardo Silva to the Etihad Stadium after agreeing a six-figure weekly salary in Manchester:

A source from the Etihad was quoted in the report and said:

"Everything was agreed between the two clubs late on Thursday night. Mendy and City had already agreed terms. There are bonuses attached to the fee depending on trophies. It will be official once he's done his duties with France.

"City aren't done yet either, they still want to bring a few more faces in. Pep still wants a left-sided defender as well."

Following Silva's £40 million move to City last week, manager Pep Guardiola also attempted to solve his goalkeeping problem with Benfica No. 1 Ederson. The Portuguese club announced they had reached a deal with City for £34.9 million, per the Guardian's Marcus Christenson.

Confirmation of Mendy's move would tick off the third target Goal's Sam Lee reported would join this summer as they embark on a transfer crusade of massive proportions in their efforts to rebuild:

It's no surprise Guardiola is on the hunt for a left-back shortly after it was confirmed Gael Clichy will leave the club, while Aleksandar Kolarov remains another option for the manager on that side of defence.

Veteran Pablo Zabaleta has also left the Etihad, a departure that means there are also likely to be efforts made in strengthening at right-back in the weeks to come.

Mendy, like Silva, was a part of the Monaco side that manager Leonardo Jardim led to this season's Ligue 1 title, and the 22-year-old contributed 11 assists across all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe counts himself among Mendy's fans, although he has noted the France international doesn't fit the usual job description of a full-back playing under Guardiola:

His age means City can hope to have the Frenchman guarding their flanks for some years to come, having settled for older signings closer to their prime in that particular position for some time. 

Speculation of a move to Manchester arose earlier in the week when Mendy posted a Snapchat of himself on a private plane, although he later dispelled the rumours with another post in Paris, via Get French Football:

It now appears the defender was merely delaying the inevitable, however, as City look to poach another talent from the Stade Louis II in the hope he can help them make a return to major title contention.

Guardiola is taking little time to begin his summer renovations after the conclusion of his maiden campaign in England, with the Catalan coach motivated to improve his selection of resources to avoid another season without silverware.
