NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Bleacher Addition

Jeff ShullOct 13, 2009

First off, I'd just like to apologize for not doing last week's power rankings.

Week Five of the NFL is in the books, and here are the power rankings thus far.

Notes for the week:

TOP NEWS

Colts Jaguars Football
Rams Seahawks Football
Mississippi Football
  • The Manning brothers swap, but remain on top.
  • The Broncos and Bengals made the biggest jumps, each going up nine spots.
  • So far, the Broncos have moved from No. 25 to No. 5 since my first installment, and the Bengals have moved from No. 23 to No. 7.
  • The Ravens fell the hardest with an eight spot tumble after losses to New England and Cincinnati.

1. Colts (5-0): Last Week's Rank—2

The Colts have been incredible on offense picking up right where they have been even without Tom Moore, Marvin Harrison, and Tony Dungy. His new weapons are looking incredibly talented. Oh, and their defense is second in the league in points per game allowed.

2. Giants (5-0): Last Week's Rank—1

The Giants have been dominating their opponents thus far save for one game, but they will be tested this week when they go to New Orleans.

3. Saints (4-0): Last Week's Rank—4

The Saints are coming off a bye week playing great defense and dominating on offense. They will be tested with the Giants coming to town.

4. Vikings (5-0): Last Week's Rank—7

The Vikings looked amazing on Monday Night Football two weeks ago and have a stranglehold on that division. Brett Favre looks rejuvenated and is playing mistake-free football thus far.

5. Broncos (5-0): Last Week's Rank—14

The Broncos have lifted themselves to the top five with defense and taking care of the ball. Josh McDaniels has to love this with all the criticism he took before the season.

6. Falcons (3-1): Last Week's Rank—8

The Falcons got an incredible win this week at San Francisco. Roddy White finally got going with Michael Turner finally coming through in the running game. They are clicking on all cylinders.

7. Bengals (4-1): Last Week's Rank—16

The Bengals are for real and there is nothing anyone can say otherwise. Take away a fluke play and they are 5-0

8. Steelers (3-2): Last Week's Rank—11

The Steelers moved up to this spot mostly due to the way they dominated the Chargers two weeks ago on Sunday night. They will get even better if Troy Polamalu comes back this week.

9. Eagles (3-1): Last Week's Rank—10

The Eagles needed that bye week more than anyone in the league. Now that they have McNabb and Westbrook back healthy, they should be moving up soon.

10. Patriots (3-2): Last Week's Rank—6

The Pats blew a 10-point lead at Denver and Tom Brady did not look himself. If they are going to win the division, he needs to be more consistent.

11. Ravens (3-2): Last Week's Rank—3

The Ravens have lost two straight to the Patriots and Bengals. Aside from the Chargers, they haven't really beaten a good team. This week against Minnesota will be a huge test.

12. Jets (3-2): Last Week's Rank—5

The Jets looked awful against the Saints then lost a nail biter to Miami last night. The Braylon Edwards trade looks like the Jets' offense is going to start opening up.

13. Bears (3-1): Last Week's Rank15

The Bears are in a fight for the division with Minnesota and Jay Cutler is getting better each week. They don't have to play Minnesota until week 12 so they will need to build their resume until then.

14. Chargers (2-2): Last Week's Rank—9

The Chargers nearly came back after a 28-point deficit to the Steelers on the road, but it just was too much to overcome. They have Denver coming to town on Monday Night Football after a bye; they need to win in order to avoid falling 3.5 games back in the division.

15. 49ers (3-2): Last Week's Rank—12

In a surprising game to say the least, the Falcons were all over the Niners from start to finish. A 35-point loss at home doesn't make you look like a division winner.

16. Cowboys (3-2): Last Week's Rank—13

The Cowboys struggled to beat an 0-5 team, but their only losses are to undefeated teams. They are still very much in a fight for the division, but have already lost to the Giants.

17. Packers (2-2): Last Week's Rank—17

The Packers struggled to stop the Vikings last week and are now 2.5 games behind them for the division. They can gain some confidence with wins against Detroit and Cleveland before Minnesota comes to Lambeau Field.

18. Cardinals (2-2): Last Week's Rank—19

The Cardinals got a nice win with a goal-line stand against the Texans, but they really should have been able to move the ball better against them at home.

19. Seahawks (2-3): Last Week's Rank—23

The Seahawks are a completely different team with Matt Hasselbeck; now it's time for them to make a run at the division.

20. Jaguars (2-3): Last Week's Rank—18

The Jags were completely obliterated last week against the Seahawks. I think they may have been scared when Owen Schmidt busted his head open with his helmet.

21. Texans (2-3): Last Week's Rank—20

The Texans' defense is being exposed every week and they need to fix it if they want to compete with the Colts.

22. Dolphins (2-3): Last Week's Rank—28

The Dolphins are coming off two division wins and Chad Henne is 2-0 as a starter. Maybe the Pennington injury is a blessing in disguise as they were able to make big plays in the passing game.

23. Panthers (1-3): Last Week's Rank—26

The Panthers finally got a win, but it was against the Redskins playing without Albert Haynesworth...not very impressive.

24. Redskins (2-3): Last Week's Rank—25

The Redskins are the worst team in terms of production per dollar spent. They spent so much money in free agency and have looked terrible even in wins. Their opponent's combined record is 2-18 aside from the 5-0 Giants, they should be 4-1 right now.

25. Titans (0-5): Last Week's Rank—22

The Titans have a boat load of problems, including a backup QB who doesn't even seem interested in playing football. Albert Haynesworth was definitely a huge loss for this team.

26. Bills (1-4): Last Week's Rank—21

The Bills aren't able to get the running game going, and the offense is suffering.

27. Lions (1-4): Last Week's Rank—27

The Lions need to get Matthew Stafford back on the field. An injury like this could really stunt his growth

28. Raiders (1-4): Last Week's Rank—24.

The Raiders have looked just terrible in the past two weeks against the Broncos and Giants, but playing two 5-0 teams will do that to you. They could have the worst offense in the league.

29. Browns (1-4): Last Week's Rank—32

The Browns cannot establish any sort of identity and their defense is just awful. I wrote this last power rankings and nothing has changed; besides Derek Anderson being the QB.

30. Chiefs (0-5): Last Week's Rank—29

In the midst of a four game stretch against NFC East teams, 0-7 is highly likely for the Chiefs.

31. Bucs (0-5): Last Week's Rank—30

The Bucs are struggling to find a QB who can lead them; maybe it's time for Josh Freeman to take over. What do they have to lose?

32. Rams (0-5): Last Week's Rank—31

The Rams are having trouble adjusting to Steve Spagnuolo's schemes, and the offense is just awful.
