Adam WellsApr 26, 2017

ESPN is announcing layoffs of a number of journalists and on-air talent Wednesday as part of the network's budget-cutting efforts.

Per Ahiza Garcia and Frank Pallotta of CNN Money, ESPN is expected to lay off 100 employees, including on-air personalities and writers from radio, television and online.

A number of ESPN's employees who received layoff notices took to Twitter to alert their followers about the network's decision:

Bob Ley, who has been with ESPN since its first year in 1979 and currently serves as host for Outside The Lines, offered a parting message for his former colleagues on a difficult day:

While ESPN didn't offer an official comment on the layoffs, network president John Skipper told Garcia and Pallotta: "These decisions impact talented people who have done great work for our company. I would like to thank all of them for their efforts and their many contributions to ESPN."

ESPN's layoffs come five months after Joe Bel Bruno of the Hollywood Reporter reported the network lost 2 million subscriptions in 2016, bringing its total subscriber base down to 90 million.
