Suns Reportedly Will Retain GM Ryan McDonough with 1 Year Remaining on Contract

Scott PolacekApr 17, 2017

The Phoenix Suns will reportedly keep general manager Ryan McDonough for the 2017-18 season.

Marc Stein of ESPN reported the news Monday and noted McDonough is entering the final year of his contract.

The Suns hired McDonough in 2013 in a move that was notable because he was just 33 years old at the time. He started as a 23-year-old special assistant to basketball operations with the Boston Celtics, accumulated significant scouting experience and eventually became the assistant general manager with Boston before the Phoenix hiring.

The Suns impressed in his first season at 48-34. However, they haven't demonstrated improvement in the standings under McDonough's watch since with three straight losing seasons:

2013-1448-34
2014-1539-43
2015-1623-59
2016-1724-58

McDonough was still optimistic his team is about to turn the corner, per Jack Magruder of FanRag Sports:

"

Next year, we expect to win significantly more than that. So how long does it take? That's a good question. I don't know. This is a multi-year process. However, if we are good over the couple of years I think we will be good for 10 years after that, because usually you win with guys in their late 20s to early 30s, and in a few years the core of our team will still be in their mid-20s and have a lot of talent, and I think a lot of depth.

"

Phoenix has a handful of young building blocks, including 19-year-old Marquese Chriss and 20-year-old Devin Booker, who turned heads this season when he scored 70 points in a single game. Eric Bledsoe is also still theoretically in prime at 27 years old.

That core will have one season under McDonough's current contract to prove it can compete.
